difference between POWr DIther and Dither

I know this is such a newbie question but what it the difference between POWr Dither and Dither in Pro Tools Le? Why would Digidesign even include Dither if POWr Dither gives you the choice of three different noise shaping types?

Thanks that helped a lot but I have one more question realated to POWr Dither. What is the difference between Noise Shaping types 1-3? Should one or another be used for different sound characters? Thanks.

Good question,
I've read many instruction manuals, but as I recall none of them break it down as to which type is good for what. It really should be the user's choice by carefully listening the particular piece of audio they're working on.
I use some hardware converters that don't give any option, only on or off. However, most software dithers have these choices.
So, my advice is to start from type 1, and listen to the low level information, end of fades, reverb tails, etc...Then try type 2. Do the same thing..Than decide.
Should also try turning the NS off, use just plain dither. Listen.

Yeah this definately helps. I will try to listen to the low level information and then decide for myself. It'll be some much needed 'ear practice' that all good producers/engineers need. Thanks.
