It's the code from one of their digital consoles. IIRC, the C200. I'm sure it resembles the analog desks because SSL wanted a similar sound.

The UAD is a different code base to either the Waves or Duende plugins.
It is another licensed emulation of the 4k compressor.

I will probably pass as well. I already have several SSL EQ options, and several emulations of their compressors. I don' think I would end up using it either.

Me too... (as I've already had it for a few years).... & still lovin' it!!

I think there's better options out there for limiters, but as a bus compressor, it's hard to beat, (especially if you've been privilideged enough to use the real thing).

I think it takes a while for people to get their head around an SSL comp - sometimes it only takes a little to create that magic, & it's quite easy to make it sound bad if heavy handed, (unless intentional)!!

Juat spent the evening working/playing with the plugin, it's really excellent, flexible but quite subtle unless you really push it obviously. A bargain at under $40.
