HDN thunderbolt, 8x8x8 io, and 192 or 96 io
I just purchased a HDN Thunderbolt system with HDIO 8x8x8. I also added a d-box for monitoring/summing which takes up 2/8 of my analog inputs.
I'd like to have at least 12 inputs for recording drums and a few others for external hardware inserts. So I am looking for a way to add additional io to my system. Some thoughts are to add either a Focusrite ISA 828 or 428 w/AD card or a UA 4-710d via adar optical for additional io. However where the additional io is for drums, which I often replace or overlay with samples, and for hardware inserts, I am wondering if I may be better off with a small mixer and using a 96 or 192. Some info: I record at 24/96k. Typically record 1-2 tracks at a time w/ exception being drums My thoughts are that I would use the 6 channels w/ nicer pres I have available with the HD IO 8x8x8 and then use an additional 6 channels of a 96 or 192 for remaining drums. Then have at least 2 additional io for hardware inserts. My question am I better off with 8 inputs via optical using a UA 4-710d or ISA, or better of with a 96 or 192? Which would have better conversion? and should I expect stability in PT11 with the now unsupported blue units? If I go the 96 or 192 option I assume I just add it to the second input of the thunderbolt and clock it to the HD IO using BNC? |

Re: HDN thunderbolt, 8x8x8 io, and 192 or 96 io
do not get a 96, just don't (002 quality)
192s with updated firmware seem happy with HD I/Os (yes, use 2 75 ohm BNC cables connected to the Loop Sync ports) better I can't say

Uad 4-710. You've also the option to go up to 192 through the eas/EBU. Lovely pre's varying between tube and ss. Very versatile.
