Default Vari-speed

This has come up more than once but I have not found an answer that makes sense and something that happended the other day got me thinking again about vari-speed. My 003 set-up launched using pro tools 9 and was playing back sessions about a semitone or two down. Don't ask me how and I was not able to repeat the issue. However it got me thinking about adjusting sample rate between that standard increments and why this isn't built into the software and if anyone knows of a work around. In the old days you just slowed down the tape. DO NOT suggest plugins that process the audio here please.

HD w/ a Sync I/O or HD has a VSO option
I yet to find a good external clock that is fully variable, lost of pull options but not fully variable
Limited market is my assumption for there not being one on the market

Hi, Well I will mention the Vari-speed option of Elastic Audio in Pro Tools as it basically does what you're asking. My main complaint is that it only works off the tempo (AFAIK), and not keys or musical intervals. I've had success with it for Vari-speed recording and playback effects.

Another option is to use an external audio editor that does sample rate conversion at any increment.

It's not vari-speed, but I've more than once set up a new session at a different SR than the audio was recorded at, then imported the audio without SR conversion to get the tempo/pitch change I wanted. Mixed, maybe some formant change on vocals, and then do the SR conversion after the mix. Just thought I'd mention it.
