Default Re: Post Production - where to start?

Hello Kol12,
In New Mexico, where I live, there are two or three city and state organizations that promote the film industry. One of these sites advertised auditions for actors and a need for crew members. Last year I emailed the contacts for several of these and got a response from one of them. It turned out to be the director of an independent film, and I convinced her to allow me to volunteer as a helper (best boy) on location shoots. I assisted the gaffer and shadowed the sound mixer for four days. I showed up early to work, busted my hump, brought bottles of water to people, and took notes. (I brought my own cooler, ice, and water from home bc NM can be hot and dry.)
On the third day I was the boom operator/sound mixer because the pro didn’t show up. The AD liked me and called me for help on a second indie film the following week where I did all of the location recording, including setting up the lav and operating boom mics.
The AD and grip are also actors, directors, colorists, etc. on other projects. If I hadn’t had my day job to return to, I could have networked into other projects, I’m sure. I’m mixing post for the second project director, and she’s crewing on a film now that’s starring Emma Stone.
So because I volunteered for eight days on two projects, I proved myself, got my foot in the door, and got tremendous experience.
Sometimes you have to get out there and make your own opportunities happen.

If you really want to self-learn, a.k.a do it the hard way, insert a limiter to your master fader and set it to output -10, then start editing and mix the stuff while you go. Learning keyboard shortcuts for editing makes the job way faster.

Don’t do this.

Not really what OP is asking anyway. The best answer stands and that is networking. Luck and happenstance are also a factor. Motivation and the willingness to learn even things you think you already know.

Basically you need to find someone who’s willing to give a novice a chance. They’re out there. Explore every avenue to find them.

It seems that freelancing is becoming more common in this field: https://www.pro-tools-expert.com/pro...sional-in-2022 Despite what I've been able to learn myself about audio post however, I don't have any experience. So I don't know if I could even attempt to go freelance? It still seems like I need to find someone to learn from and gain experience.
