Default Creating Soundtracks

Are there any general steps to creating a soundtrack for video using pro tools?

I know how to create audio by itself, but do I import the video into pro tools or can I even do that without buying some add on or plug in.

I have pro tools 10.2.

I have done plenty of recording audio, but never had to sync it to video etc.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I have about 2 weeks to do this project, that includes write, record, and apply to video. This is not my full time job, so it will be a stretch.
The soundtrack will be for a video, approximately 3 minutes in length.

Pro Tools works with video without any additional plugins now. Complete Production Toolkit will get you more tracks etc but right out of the box you can import quicktime into Pt and start working.

Make sure to change your session setup to be 48khz 24 bit and match the frame rate of the video.

You are correct though, starting out and getting finished product is going to be tough but will also be a learning experience. People here will be happy to help if you can be specific about the questions you have.

First tip, once you've imported the picture into Pro Tools the video track will tell you what the frame rate is. It will be red if it does not match your session setup.

Good luck.

One advice I can share, is to always let your camera record a soundtrack that you use for sync purposes. If you have multiple takes from more then one camera (I myself often use Canon 5D + Go Pro Hero 2), editingsoftware like FCPX will take the soundtracks and align the takes automatically so it's easier to edit and jump between the different angels from the same take...

Thanks for the help. I would not have known to do that with the sample rate.
Will keep you posted as this progresses.
