Default AVB Cards for Windows

AVB connectivity on an Avid S3 avoids discrete audio cabling. While certain Macs have AVB, no current Windows machine (TMK) does... but there is a PCIe AVB card with Windows drivers.

Pricey, but cheaper than a MacPro trashcan.

Has anyone successfully enabled AVB on an S3 with PT11 on a Win machine using the Echo Streamware card?

Switches like the MOTU AVB Switch...

don't solve the problem, they just network AVB to devices that have AVB-enabled Ethernet ports.

Broadcom, Yukon, Marvell, and Xilink all have AVB-Ethernet chipsets shipping, so there will be more AVB PCIe cards soon.

I guess the question is if there is a rock solid driver yet..

Found another AVB-E PCIE card.
N-3010AVB from www.s2konnect.com
Certified up to Win7/64, but not Win8 or Mac.

Focusrite has elected to use Audinate's "version of AVB-E", Dante, for audio over Ethernet. Regretable, since Dante isn't IEEE AVB-E.

Rednet works with PT HD, but doesn't help get audio back from PT to an S3 for monitor and cue.

Another sign of S3 playing catch-up with the live "parent" .... the S3L-X uses AVB to handle digital audio with Stage 16 I/Os (16 A in w/ mic preamps, A/D, and remote control of preamps, 8 A out, plus 4 AES3 D/D). No sign of such links on the pro mixing side, even on the S5 and S6.

So... will plain IEEE AVB replace Digilink, or will Avid do a "Dante" and use proprietary AVB?

Default Intel AVB PCIE card shipping

Intel Ethernet Server Adapter I210T1

IEEE 802.1Qav Audio-Video-Bridging (AVB) for tightly controlled media stream synchronization, buffering, and reservation
High-performing design supporting PCI Express generation 2.1 2.5 GT/s

$79.85, Amazon Prime. Compared to $800 for the Streamware card. Hmmm.

I'll see if it works in my Win w/s with my S3.

Today I got that one:

Sonnet Presto Gigabit Ethernet Pro PCIe Card GE1000LAB-E

I use it in a Mac but it says "for Windows" on the box...

That's a good card for the money, but it's not an AVB Ethernet card.
AVB requires compliance with IEEE 802.1Qav in addition to 802.3, and an AVB driver.
I'll know soon if Intel's AVB card driver set includes an AVB driver. I can't tell from the d/l page.

My Intel card shipped today.

I bought it only for AVB and it works... On a Mac with 10.10.2
Since it's the chip that matters it should work on Windows as well (if Sonnet supplies a driver I guess...)

Made, glad to hear it works! The specs for that card don't recite that it is AVB-compliant, which might become apparent with heavy loading. Under heavy loading, all the cards in an AVB network have to "respect" the reservations made by the other cards. The non-AVB cards don't "speak" the IEEE 802.1Qav timeslot reservations protocols and transmit at random intervals.

Then again, the card may be AVB-compliant but marketed without disclosing the fact (sounds unlikely, though).

Or, if you have a Mac that has AVB on the motherboard, the mobo AVB may "make" the Sonnet card behave.

If the new Intel card (now in transit) doesn't work, I'll try that Sonnet card.

Default Re: AVB Cards for Windows

Update. I received an Intel I210T1 AVB-E nic. Installation went smoothly, driver downloaded from Intel site (no CD shipped with nic). The S3 control surface worked through the nic with a crossover Cat 6 cable, and through a plain ethernet switch. What was/is missing in the Windows world is glue software between the nic and ASIO. I have both MS native ASIO and ASIO4ALL. I installed MOTU's AVB driver for Windows... no joy. So, I'll post a request in Ideascale for Avid to develop an AVB driver for Windows so that owners of S3's and S3L's can use AVB to link the I/O in the S3 with the host.

The Intel I210T1 nic costs about $80 and is a PCIe 1X device. It ships with both tall and short brackets. Last year, ABV-E nics were in the $800 range.

Please VOTE for an AVB driver for Windows in Ideascale.
