Normalize VS Gain - is there a difference?
Is there is difference between applying Normalize to a a piece of audio VS manually applying clip gain?
Often it seems Normalize will not boost a clip because of some unseen audio peak... it which case, I gain the clip to match the others that normalize did boost. So they appear to do the same thing, except one is automatic and the other is manual. |

Re: Normalize VS Gain - is there a difference?
As you suggested, one is automatic and the other is manual. That's the primary difference. The trouble with manual is that you can easily send a track into the red without immediately recognizing it, as you also described. Besides being quick, Normalize also takes those peaks into account and prevents breaking through the ceiling.

Re: Normalize VS Gain - is there a difference?
Another difference (or way to describe it):
Normalize brings up or down the level based on the highest level "peak" in the clip. Pick 0.0 dB or less, and the highest level will be put there. If your waveform changes little the "peak" must have already been close. On the other hand, Gain brings up or down the level based on a relative plus or minus dB. So, a file with -5 dB peak needs +2 dB Gain to be -3 dB peak. But a -5 dB peak needs -3 dB Normalize to be -3 dB peak. Just as an example. Without enough understanding of dynamics, the RMS modes could be more confusing, and the above discussion is just thinking about peak level. Sent from my Pixel 6 Pro using Tapatalk
