Default Carbon Mon Main Noise

hi everyone
i am running my Avid Carbon Main Out L+R as my studio monitor output. However, this output has a lot of inherent noise. a fairly substantial white noise is present when the Main Out is unattenuated via hardware setup.

Anyone else experience this?

The bummer is that i designed my 24 track studio thinking i could take advantage of these extra 2 monitor outs to feed my monitor controller. Would be a real bummer to have to instead use 2 channels of the 24...

What version of Pro Tools are you on (and therefore firmware for the Carbon)?

There have been a few fixes for the Carbon since release in firmware/Pro Tools versions.

Nothing like that here, and I have a pretty sensitive monitoring setup.

Are you using TRS leads (rather than TS)? Any other ambient noise sources (flourescent lights etc)? Apologies if these are all obvious questions.

I don't think I've seen another post complaining about output noise on the Carbon, so I'm assuming it's a duff unit, bad cabling or some other combination of unfortunate circumstances, rather than a design flaw in the box itself.

It sounds like a mismatch of levels between Carbon and your monitoring amplifiers.
It sounds as if your amplifier is expecting -10dBV and Carbon is sending it
+4 dBu line level signal.
Are you feeding your monitors from Main Jacks or from LINE 1 and 2 on D-Sub connector?

In Carbon booklet it says:

Monitor L–R Outputs
The Monitor L–R outputs on the back panel are independent of Line Out 1–8 (DB25). Use 1/4-inch TRS (balanced) or 1/4-inch TS (unbalanced) cables to connect these line level outputs to loudspeakers for stereo monitoring. These outputs can be configured to operate at +4 dBu or –10 dBV, and have a maximum operating level of +24 dBu.

This setting is on the Line I/O Page of Interface Pro Tools Carbon dialog box.
