Default Audio to MIDI

The new Commit feature is very nice. Take some clip/track/instrument/MIDI data and render it in seconds on a new track. That's good. Well, new possibilities leads to new inspiration. Just imagine doing the same, but opposite: Select an audio track/clip and "Commit" it to MIDI. Very useful when replacing drums or other stuff.

This ability has been part of Melodyne for years. Never tried it on drums, but that sort of thing can be done with other AudioSuite plugins such as Massey DRT.

The future is now.

DP also has audio to MIDI also. Maybe if PT adds some built in tuning we might see it.

I have heard of these options. Unfortunately, I don't own any of these plug-ins. Except for Melodyne Essential, but I don't think it is big enough to do it. Would be so much nicer with a built-in, plug-in-free solution.

Nowadays, I have to export audio, go to Cubase, Create MIDI notes from hitpoints, then back to Pro Tools and import MIDI.

Not as simple as it might sound. As has been mentioned, you can do such a thing with Melodyne. I've done it that way, but its not an easy operation, especially with a more complex sound. Even with Melodyne's Direct Note Access feature, you get a lot extraneous stuff on the midi. Takes a lot finessing to work out the MIDI track just right. So, in order for there to be a reverse audio-to-midi feature like you mention, there would have to be something akin to Melodyne's Direct Note Access under the hood in PT to make that work. That's pretty complex programming and I doubt we'd see it any time soon....if ever.

I've used Melodyne for this also within pro tools.
It's unfortunate that it's not out of the box though since Cubase had it, Logic has it, as mentioned above DP has it....and the list goes on.
