Question 11r & pro tools le issue - system crashing

Hey all,

Just recently upgraded to WINDOWS 7 64BIT, in which everything was working perfectly until last night.

Everytime I locked the tempo in the 11R control window to my PTLE session, my session would stop running and ultimately crash. Basically, I click the little lock icon & my session freezes (get a white screen). Once crashed, I would have to restart my PC in order to restart my session - it's getting annoying.

Luckily, PTLE only stops running when I lock the tempo - everything else works fine.

I've been up & down Avid's website as well as this forum and am thinking it could be the fact that I'm only using 1 hard drive. Before I buy another H/D, can anyone tell me otherwise? I'm not a super tech guy, but I do have some knowledge to help me get by.

Here's my Sandra report...Thanks everyone!

Have you done the Windows 7 Optimizations? I personally dont do them all, such as turn off Aero, but you may need to.

You are only showing 1 hard drive. You MUST have 2 hard drives minimum. 1 for OS and programs, and 1 just for recording to. Your best option is to get another internal drive. I suggest you get a 500, 640, or 750GB Western Digital Caviar BLACK hard drive with 32 MB cache. You could go 1TB if you want/can find them at a good price.

If you want to use an external drive instead, then i still suggest you get one of the above drives and then buy an external case that has E-Sata as an option. You could also get a case that has E-SATA, FIREWIRE, and USB plugs, but do not use USB drives for Pro Tools LE. You can use them on PT9 with W7, but not in PT LE. PT LE will need an internal, external Firewire, or External E-SATA. E-SATA is the best way to go for external even in PT9.

Try Updating the drivers for your Video Card. Looks like you are using the MS driver. Go to Geforce.com and and either search, or let it detect your video card. You have a Nvidia Geforce 7900 GS video card.

Since you are using an AMD Dual Core, you need to have the Dual Core Optimizer.

And if you would really like to improve performance, Buy 2 WD drives from above, get Acronis True Image Home 2010/2011 and CLONE your current OS drive onto one of the new WD drives. Take out the old drive, set it on the shelf and use the new hard drive as your OS drive. Your current HDD is only 8MB cache, so a 32MBcache drive for your OS would help as well. But you at least need to get a dedicated Recording drive.

IMPORTANT! You MUST use a secondary hard drive (not your main OS drive) for recording and playback of audio in Pro Tools.

Recording or playback from the OS (Operating System) drive is known to be problematic and the cause of many different error types. If you are using your system drive and encountering errors, the first thing you should do is get a compatible drive.

USB drives are not supported and are known to be problematic, so please do not use them with Pro Tools.
Pro Tools supports recording and playback to a secondary drive that meets the following requirements:

7200 rpm or faster

Firewire drives must have the Oxford 911 (FW400 port), Oxford 912 (FW400 & FW800 ports) or Oxford 924 (FW800 ports) Bridge chip. USB drives are not supported and are known to be problematic.
Great Internal Hard drives:
WD Caviar Black 500GB

WD Caviar Black 640GB

WD Caviar Black 750GB

I use this case, it comes with an E-SATA bracket if you dont have a built in E-SATA port, you will need a free SATA port on your MOBO to use the E-SATA bracket. Your best bet is to install another internal drive, but if you must have an external than E-SATA is best. This is just a case, you buy an internal drive, like the ones above, and place it inside the case.
External USB and E-SATA case

AMD Desktop Processors
The AMD processors listed below were used by Beta Sites during Pro Tools 8.0 development. They were not tested by Digidesign Engineering but are considered compatible with Pro Tools LE 8.0 for Windows:

AMD Athlon™ 64

AMD Athlon™ 64 FX

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core

AMD Opteron™

Notes:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core requires the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer

Greetings Benoni,

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out. I do see your name all over this forum offering advice, educating, creating some dope presets...May I say, it is greatly appreciated. Props to you.

Had a feeling my system was only sub-par and that I needed to do some upgrades. Guess I just needed a swift kick upside the head to get me to move forward. That said, I will follow your suggestions to the letter.

Again, appreciate your help!

Nito
