Laying Back Mixes to a DA88 WTF?
I'm wondering if anyone out there has been doing this on a regular basis. It seems like it shouldn't be this difficult. I have a sync i/o & 2 192's. I want to lock the protools system to Black Burst via the 'Video Ref In' jack, then lock the DA88 to the sync i/o via the 'Word Clock Out" jack. no go. why?
It seems that there is simply no Word Clock signal coming out of that particular jack. Oh, I've already given up on connecting TDIF directly to the 192, I don't know why it would even be there if it doesn't work. I'm using an IF88-AE and connecting to the AES side of the Digital i/o. The only way I've been able to lock everything together is by Genlocking my Aardsync to black burst, then connecting word clock out of the Aardaync to the 'Word Clock In' of the Sync i/o and a second output of the Aardsync to the wordclock in of the DA88. I'd like to streamline this a little more, How does everyone else do this kind of thing? any help would be appreciated. -BK |

Re: Laying Back Mixes to a DA88 WTF?
Yes, this can be tricky. You need to use the word clock output of the 192 I/O NOT the Sync I/O, believe it or not, and then in the hardware setup window, set the "Ext. Clock Output" setting to "Word Clock (TDif)". There is also an Answerbase entry for this, check ID:7981 for more info. Jon Connolly Digidesign Product Specialist |

Re: Laying Back Mixes to a DA88 WTF?
Hi Jon,
Thanks for replying. I saw your posts from a couple of years ago on this subject and tried what was reccomened and it didn't work. to keep things simple I left out the Black Burst side of the issue. I had a TDIF cable going from the 192 to the TDIF i/o of the DA88. Ext out Word clock set to TDIF and a BNC cable going from the Ext Clock out of that 192 to the word clock input of the DA88. I put a BNC 75 ohm terminator on the word clock out jack of the DA88 (I did not use the BNC T). Selected the 192 as the clock master and selected "wordclock" as the clock source on the DA88 and....... nada. it no workie. So can you see anything wrong with what I'm doing? it couldn't be that little BNC T could it? This scenerio as I said earkier, didn't include the Black Burst side of the equasion. now how would you genlock this rig to video and still maintain the sync set up using the 192? Provided it actually would work. -BK |

Re: Laying Back Mixes to a DA88 WTF?
You can keep the Sync I/O as the clock master (and therefore blackburst) of the system but you must use the Word clock output of the 192 I/O NOT the Sync I/O for your Tascam, even if the Sync I/O is in the system. It sounds like you have everything setup correctly. At this point, if you haven't already, you should check with that Answerbase entry I mentioned in my previous post. It covers this fairly well from what I recall. Other than that, have you tried?... - a different BNC cable from the 192 to the Tascam? - a different Tdif cable? - powering everything down, restarting and trying it all again? If none of this helps, you may want to give Digidesign Tech Support a call on Monday, 650-731-6300. Jon Connolly Digidesign Product Specialist |

Re: Laying Back Mixes to a DA88 WTF?
BK,
I see your problem. The additional termination needs to be on the Word Clock INPUT of the DA-88, not the output. Putting a terminator on the output doesn't change how the DA-88 receives sync. A BNC 'T' is the easiest way to accomplish this. This is an idioSYNCrasy of the DA-88. Hope this helps, JF |

Re: Laying Back Mixes to a DA88 WTF?
hello !
Does this setup apply only to DA 88's ? How is the WC out of the Sync outputting to other machines ? Peace, Olivier |

Re: Laying Back Mixes to a DA88 WTF?
THe T connector and terminator is required for the DA-78 also, so I suspect it's true for all of the series. Also the word clock is supposed to be a 50 ohm cable and terminator not 75 ohm, at least on the 78.

Re: Laying Back Mixes to a DA88 WTF?
Well I just put in the BNC T and terminated the input instead of the output and lo & behold, it works. thanks for the help guys.

Re: Laying Back Mixes to a DA88 WTF?
I just checked with my notes from the Tascam site (really a good resource) and it should be 50 ohms. But if your set up is working I wouldn't touch it. Just an FYI if you issues in the future.

Re: Laying Back Mixes to a DA88 WTF?
Thanks Noiz2,
How do you think tascam reconciles the fact (i think it's a fact) that one company considers 75ohm cable to be the standard (Digi) and another considers 50ohm to be the standard (Tascam). it is working, but which standard is the 'right' standard? BTW, I just looked at Tascam.com and they don't even have the DA88 listed in any of their catagories. is there some kind of secret archive you're accessing? -BK |
