De-fragmantation.

Hi.

I have a Digidrive 9k as my Audio Drive for a month. I would like to get some tips about fragmantation.

What de-frag application software are you guys using ? I heard the Norton utilities have conflicts with PT, is that true ?

How often you defrag your disk ? I work with audio every day, all day long.

I use Norton Speed disk to defragment all my Audio Drives. I just set the the Optomize For Speed Disk 3.2. I have never had a Problem.

I've been using two 9 GB Barracudas for some time and have never defragged them. I will probably need to soon. I plan on copying everything to another drive, clearing the original drive, and copying them back. This effectively defrags the drive. It's obviously only an option if you have the extra drive space.

I've seen posts that recommend initializing the drive before copying back when using this method. Does anyone know if this is really necessary, or is it just a quick method of clearing the drive? Thanks in advance.

I've used TechToolsPro to defrag without any problems.

I recently had a discussion with Digi Tech about this and was told that ideally you should initialize your drives every day in an optimum situation and no later than once a month if you are a semi-professional studio(30-40 hrs a week).I wish I had the time and patience to do that. It's more like once every three months for me.Also was told that if you do a quick initialize rather than a low-level init on you main HD it will not delete any of your authorizations. Anybody tried this?

I would avoid defragmenting your drives with any utility if you can.

Back up your files externally, then copy your files to an open drive.

Then do a low level format to the drive. Then go home and come back the next day and bring the files back.

I do this every 2 or 3 months. Defragmenting with a utility usually makes your disk more problematic.

I've been told that low level formatting will decrease the lifespan of your hard drive and to only do it if the data is corrupted or there is some other problem... is there any truth to this?
