I have been using pro tools for about 6 years now. I've had my share of issues with installing it and getting things to work through compatibility issues. So many so that i have a midi controller that i need to use, but rather than spend the hours trying to get it running, i just work around it. Today i launched a new project from a template, so that i could start to get some work done as usual. I found that when i opened the midi editor, my mouse was jumping around the screen as if i had set my framerate to 3fps. Super slow when i try to do anything, meanwhile no changes have been made to my PC, and everything else works great. im not even hitting 20% usage of RAM or CPU. when i click and drag the mouse to highlight sections of the project, it takes a minute to happen, and if i highlight a note, it takes even longer (around 5 seconds), and then the note is played. I couldn't find a solution for this anywhere. I searched and some people were saying that it might be having a CD in my CD drive. i ejected it and sure enough, there was one in there, so i thought i had it fixed. Didn't work. I trashed my preferences. Installed PT 10 to see if it was happening there, and it is. Please i would appreciate any help or suggestion, i am so desperate at this point.

The cd in drive is but one impediment to good performance with Windows. Also make sure that the floppy drive is disabled from inside Windows BIOS - you may not have a drive but Windows doesn't know that and still provides for one. Also have you done all the system optimizations Avid and others recommend? Back in the day BlackViper used to have a website that had a ton of info on Windows optimizations.
Do you have a separate drive for PT to record to? Do you use samples and if so are they on a separate drive? What is the speed of your system drive (or is it an ssd)? |

But you haven't answered the questions I asked about the drives in your setup. Answering things like this piece-meal isn't helping you to get a good and quick answer. |

sometimes i use samples, but it happens on the project i just created with nothing but 3 midi notes in it. samples are kepts on the same 7200 SSD system drive. |

I have now done all of the optimizations from the avid website, and the problem persists.

An interrupt conflict will also create that sort of weird mouse response. If you have a PC mouse, change to a USB mouse, or vice versa. If you just added a MIDI controller of some sort, it may need a device driver to work properly: it may not be Plug and Play.

Are you by any chance trying to surf the net through a wireless connection while working in PT? That'll muck things up big time. What other crud do you have going on at the same time PT is trying to run? Do you have a virus scanner running? |
