Dolby Atmos Render CPU on macOS
Hi all,
Why does the Dolby Atmos Renderer on macOS take so much CPU? What does its CPU meter represent? A single core? A single process? I'm using a reasonable amount of re-renders, 5.1, ST, 7.1.4, and using loudness and binaural, but why is the CPU so high? Editing these settings and turning off re-renders makes very little difference. My specs are below, but I am running v5.1.0_793-98966d0d on macOS 13 on a M2 Ultra Mac Studio (20 core, 192 ram). This has been an issue on all versions of macOS 13 so far. Ironically, before I got rid of my M1 iMac, it the Renderer was only using 20-30%. I'll add screen shots of my settings. Is this just a DVS thing? What am I doing wrong? Pro Tools Ultimate 2023.9 DAR 5.1.0_793-98966d0d DVS 4.3.1

Re: Dolby Atmos Render CPU on macOS
DVS on Silicon appears to take way more resources than the Intel version. Open up Activity Monitor and see for yourself. DVS is handy, but hardware IP is always best.

Re: Dolby Atmos Render CPU on macOS
Sure! I guess I was a bit of help, but CreativeControl is very good at these questions!

Re: Dolby Atmos Render CPU on macOS
Dolby has acknowledged that this is unique to the Mac Studio Ultra and not actually using more CPU usage - but rather - has to do with the way the threads are used. My understanding is that they are refactoring how to adjust the CPU meter to show the actual values which are less than what is currently displayed.

That is good to hear. I was looking at OP's ram specs and thinking only having 64gb would be useless, but maybe I could get by with it. (main factor really is wait time than cost right now) |

Re: Dolby Atmos Render CPU on macOS
Thank you, all! This was solved for me in 5.2.0, though I use the internal renderer now. :) Sorry for my lateness. I've had some sporadic trouble posting replies.
