Default Audiobox 22vsl with PT10

So in Pro Tools 10, when I go into my I/O setup menu.. or Playback Engine, I have the the default Pro Tools Aggregate I/O I got for the initial setup.. basically so I could just hear sound coming out of my laptop's speakers, however I have a dilemma now...

I would like to use my interface, the Presonus Audio Box, as the input device, for recording, obviously, and as the output, I would like it to remain on the Aggregate I/O settings, however, you can only choose 1 playback engine, it seems.

In other words, using the interface to record is fine, perfectly ok. But then I'd like to listen back to recorded audio or whatever I'm working with in PT via my laptop's audio output/headphone jack, as I see no reason to really be listening to the output headphone jack of the Audiobox, unless I was recording and wanting to input monitor real-time or something, I don't see any other reason to use it.

You can only use one ASIO device at a time, so splitting your input and output like you want is not possible. This is by design, and is not just related to ProTools. You may be able to accomplish it using something like ASIO4All, which would replace the driver for your Audiobox, but I think you would get better performance just using the Audiobox for both recording and monitoring.

By the way, I'm assuming you are on Windows.

Hi! Thanks a lot for your reply, no, I'm on a Mac, sorry, perhaps I should have mentioned that..

Mm, if I may inquire, why would you suggest that the Audiobox would be ideal for a 'monitoring' situation, as well? Why not use the laptop's built-in outputs? Like a proper pair of studio monitoring headphones, for instance, out of the 1/8th" jack on the computer, as opposed to going to all the work of hooking up the USB interface, and then monitoring out of that.

I'm still learning, so, I'm just wondering why that would be preferable, for instance.

And it's strange you say this is 'by design', because in other DAW's, such as Ableton, I am able to do this quite easily. That is, use the Audiobox as the input device, and listen to playback on the laptop outputs.

Sorry, I thought you were on Windows.
On Mac, this is not a problem. Selecting the Aggregate I/O in the Playback Engine, you should be able to use both the computer output and the Audiobox as an input device. You will need to select which devices belong to the Aggregate group in your Macs Audio Settings. Once set up, you can then use it in PT.

I don't really see a downside. Again, I thought you were on Windows where sometimes the different latencies between devices can be more trouble than just using a single interface for all of your recording / monitoring.
