Default Exported Audio Files Different Lengths to Clips in Session

Hello,

I'm exporting some processed audio files (transferred cassettes) from pro tools (10.3.3).

I've transferred the cassette into pro tools then made 5 minute regions/clips and renamed them.

I've then highlighted and exported them as wavs to a folder.

I'ved burned then to a CD and noticed theres a repeat of about 1 to 2 seconds of the end of the previous audio file as it goes from track to track.

I imported the exported files back into pro tools and find they are infact different lengths to the originals.

It looks like the audio files are being exported with "handles"..

is this a feature or a bug.

If it's a feature, how can I turn it off ?

Thanks,

Alex

Did you export while selecting enforce Avid compatibility ?

That would quantize the clip beginning and end to the nearest frame boundary and result in 'handles' or 'padding' like you describe.

The idea behind this is to make it easier and also make sure that your audio files are still sample accurate when moving for example to Media Composer with the audio.

Hello Chris,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Nope, Avid compatibility is off.

Can you do me a favour:

consolidate a few minutes of blank, chop into bits, export and reimport to check it's not a bug.

Thanks,

Alex

Hi Alex,

just did -
> quick test session with 4 tracks - bunch of clips spread out over the 4 tracks
> multi-select all clips on the tracks
> from the clips menu : export clips as files. In my case I deliberately deviated from the sessions SR and bit depth, leaving the export as mono files / avid compatibility deselected

> import files and spot them to new tracks aligning under the original tracks

Result : as expected - all the clips have the exact same length as the original ones and spot to the exact same point in the timeline.

Not sure what you are seeing then.

I'm on 10.3.4 / OSX 10.8.2

Trash prefs ? Have you tried that ?

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for that.

I actually just saved thje session as a .ptf and went back to PT 9 on a different partition....

and it's still happening (?).

I'm guessing there's something screwy with this particular session.

I'm going to do a import session data into a new session and see what happens.

Thanks again.

Al

I wonder if it has something to do with the audiosuite handle length pref.

Is the handle length consistent ? Can you measure it and compare to the processing pref for AS in the preferences ?

hmm - we may need to call in the experts here

Hi Chris,

Unfortunately i's not the handles..

I've put that at 0 in the prefs.

As I'm working on the session at the moment I have to plough on and don't have the time to test lengths at the moment (will do later).

Interestingly, as a test I duplicated one of the tracks and healed all separations.
Using the duplicated track as a guide I re-separated it in exactly the same places. When I exported and reimported the audio files they lined up perfectly.

Very strange.

It's a shame I've got about 40 hours of material already chopped into 5 minute segments.

I REALLY don't want to have to do that for everything !

Thanks,

Al

Hmm, until that one, I was going to suggest there might be a possibility that you're locked to a 48K clock, with the session set at 44.1K

That's a weird one, eh'?
