Default Feature Request

Sorry, not sure where to put this.

CLIP EFFECTS.

This is so underdeveloped and it really could be the absolute best feature in ProTools if it was implemented properly.

- Allow users to select the plug in of choice for EQ and compression.

- but even better than that would be to double, triple, quadruple the presets so we can save in many many eq curves.

- change the horrible display so that it can be re-sized and display the presets as actual information so we can see what that preset is before we click on it.

- add a gain function.

This feature really can be amazing and thought by now that Avid would implement third party plugins into but they haven't.

You can kinda already do that. Track presets. create a track with plugins you want, settings and any ither i/o settings...

Yes, I agree. I suggested it a year ago.

You've obviously never used Clip Effects.
Here's an article about what they are:

Gain = clip gain, and the clip fx has an additional input trim and the dynamics section has an output gain.
The window can be made floating and be resized that way to a certain degree. Even though it doesn't scale.

Yeah it already has input and output gain (if you leave dynamics all flat you can still use the output gain there). Although I rarely use it there; I make heavy use of clip gain.

When clip effects were introduced there was mention of possible third party effects being added. It is brought up every year here on the DUC. Not sure what happened to that idea. I think that would take some heavy resourcing and lots of caching. I'm guessing with the current EQ and dynamics it's built into the mix engine somehow. That's a huge wild guess.

Yeah this request would be clip based not track based so they both have their purpose but they are different.

Yes but it really needs a full re-design. To be honest I think the third party implementation would be last on the list of those requests although to me it doesn't seem like it would that different than selecting different algorithms like you can with the TCE tool. I'm assuming it was some feature brought over from Media Composer and for editors this version of Clip Effects are fine but for mixing it's sorely lacking. It really could be an amazing feature.

Goombot, have you ever tried Wavelab Pro? Clip effects in Wavelab work really well. If Avid could re-design something similar to PT, that would be great.

I haven't used WaveLab but yes. Ideally it would just be any plug in or combination of plugins with the settings you want. It would certainly speed things up. Soundflow is doing most of that for me now which is amazing but if Avid re-did the Clip Effects window and actually made it useful for mixers not just some feature that they carried over from Media Composer than it would be an amazing tool.
