from spymac.com.. believe it if you like:
Date: Saturday, February 16, 2002 3:40 AM Subject: Adobe Systems Inc to buy Avid Technology Inc. Twice Bitten (Adobe Systems Inc. to buy Avid Technology Inc.) Rumors are swarming at Avid Technology Inc (AVID) (manufacturers of disk based editing systems) that they are about to be purchased by Adobe Systems Inc. (ADBE) Adobe was quite angry with Apple computer for purchasing Final Cut Pro from Macromedia Inc (MACR). Adobe had been supporting the Apple platform for years with all of their products including Adobe Premiere, only to be put into a competitive environment by the hardware manufacturer that they were so loyal to. Well it happened again. Apple recently purchased the visual effects Software Company Nothing Real that develops the products "Shake" and "Tremor". That allows Apple to compete directly with Adobe's flagship visual effects product "AfterEffects". According to Avid insiders Adobe says enough is enough already. They are planning on purchasing Avid Technology so Apple computer can't get their hands on the high-end editorial market as well. According to Avid insiders, this would be a very good move for both Avid Technology and Adobe. |

Somehow this doesn't make sense to me. Final Cut Pro is so rapidly gaining ground that Avid once owned here in NYC. It's all about the old dedicated dsp card (Avid) vs host-based (FCP) system battle. DSP systems, like ProTools, will rule for years and years still in audio due to the ever increasing massive amounts of data to be processed. However, in video, you only ususally have your 640x480 video and a few 48k/16bit audio tracks. The demand is less and therefore host processing becomes more successful. Will Adobe, a software company, buy Avid, the hardware company? Avid, you should rethink video and keep on keepin on with our splendid ProTools!

640x480? possibly for people editing content for internet streaming...
like protools and audio, all the editors i know who need power on demand (read: clients over their shoulder) still use avids. which is not to say that FCP isn't awesome and filling out the middle ground (the ever expanding middle ground) but the high ground keeps getting higher...just like PT with HD...there's more and more data to move in video too. High Def and the like. br |

Actually, video in general is much more demanding than audio...and the whole battle between hardware vs host base system remains the same for audio and video ...hardware will always be a better, more reliable system...but wether people can afford or need such a system is a different story.

Digi and Avid have passed on Bryan's "ever expanding middle ground", and will most likely pay a price for doing so.
Any hardware or software company that will continue ignoring the power of today's computers (MP's especially) and not utilize that power to enhance native processing will suffer the consequences. It's true that high end DSP based systems are here to stay for years (audio and video), but it will be very beneficial for the companies who build them to ALSO create that middle ground system, which anyone can afford and enjoy a powerful creational environment. In Digi's case - a 48 channels 002 system with MP support, retailed for $2000 will surely be a huge seller. |

FCP systems are starting to displace avids in hollywood and NY, even for high-end online stuff. With the right card, I believe one can on-line hdtv on FCP, for a miniscule fraction of what a dedcated box costs. FCP does not imply host-based. The system is variably-capable, depending on what video card is installed.

i really don't know what the hell i'm talking about...i'm just speaking from our experience with the matrox card and fcp (kinda like going native with a tc works card...meaning it doesn't feel as integrated as pt)
but like i said, i should just stay out of this one |

Adobe has been acquiring companies left and right. But all the ones I know of have been software companies. It would be new, surprising strategy if they were to want to get involved with hardware.
