Default Re: Always having to force quit Pro Tools

Let me share my story. Recently Pro Tools has started to behave sluggish, and was throwing at me errors at low cpu usage of about 30%. Very simple post session, the usual template. So i started to remove plugins, all the virtual instruments (do not need them for this project) etc, etc... Also noticed that PT stopped behaving on quit and was hanging at Closing Audio catalog....had to force quit.
Then I noticed i get clicks in the speakers that are not in the audio files. PT was throwing more errors my way. Cpu too high, remove plugins. At low cpu usage.
Finally i took a longer look at my Audio interface (Metric Halo 2882 3d running over ethernet) Was contemplating changing the ethernet cable, using Usb connection instead of Mhlink, and then, i noticed that one of the Adat cables got disconnected from my AD/DA - Lucid 88192.

Turned out - it was a clocking issue.

Go figure! After connecting the missing adat cable everything went back to smooth sailing.

Nice you were able to track it down.

This issue is what it has always seemed to be, an issue with how Pro Tools releases control of the audio hardware/interfaces when quitting the software.

Whether that's due to changing sample rates as mentioned, or using 3rd party interfaces where other software and the OS can also use it as a sound device at the same time as Pro Tools, etc.

It's a software issue in Pro Tools (and/or the OS), and needs to be taken more seriously by Avid.
I think moogboy100 is right. This must have something to do with how Pro Tools releases control of the audio hardware/interfaces when quitting the software.

The freeze on exit is not a problem running under Catalina or Mojave but happens after upgrading MacOS to Monterey.

Pro Tools works fine, opening and closing projects works fine, but Pro Tools always freezes on exit and I have to force quit the app.

I have tried the optimize tips from tope_d and the tips mentioned
I normally work on 48 kHz but tried 44,1 and 96
Deleting preferences
Turning off WiFi and Network

Others mentioned it happens on different OS's.

I"m sure that's the problem not letting go of the hardware.

*AVID*, is it possible the drivers from PT Audio Bridge might be the culprit ?

Why does PT install the Audio Bridge drivers automatically, when the DMG. folder install has a separate install package for the Audio Bridge?

Thank you.

Okay I had to import an I/O from Monterey because in Sonoma, it Would not let me change to default for the I/O.
Even when I tried to change to default, the inputs just showed 18, from 9adat to 16adat inputs and the 2channel SPDIF, it would not recognize in the I/O setup. I also tried the change the stereo mix and see if that made a difference. reboot, no change.
So I imported the I/O from a session in Monterey in Sonoma, and all is good. I was going to trash preferences if this didn't work.

*OKAY*, here's what's interesting. In Sonoma I don't have to force quit at all. (HOORAY).

I installed, my iLok and PT with just the bare bones, and nothing else.

I will now install Melodyne (NEXT), then come back, and hopefully no force quit. Then waves, and that's about it.

So my thought's are Silicon related at this point.

I hope Sonoma pans out.

More update. 8-26-24

Installed all effects bundle and so far no force quit. Will now install Melodyne.

Sorry, but still having to force quit here, though Mac Intel and Sonoma. Happens after a long session as usual and as described by many of you guys.

Since I moved from Monterey to Sonoma, the problem mostly went away.

Like you, I too when I have a long session it will hang sometimes.

When working on a long session I find CMD+S and then wait a minute for it to calm down then I quit. It seems to work well that way, but for the most part it went away.

Make sure the system preferences on your computer has full access to the disk.

Hi,
Can you confirm your Pro Tools version? There's no 24.12.2 version available.
Have you also tried clearing your cache and other optimization steps?
