Default Extract audio from mpeg?

A client sent me a QT mpeg and I imported it into ProTools. I then tried to import the audio with no luck. I then went into QT Pro and tried to extract the audio to an aiff file and there was no way to do it.

I then exported the mpeg into a QT .mov and there was no audio included with the film. Same w/ DV. So, how do you extract audio from an mpeg?

Thanks.

If it was made on a Wintel machine, chances are that the audio was muxed with the video in such a way that QT can't do anything about it.

At our facility, I have to capture with a Canopus box on a mac to have extractable audio.

Hi,

you need a MPEG StreamClip from Squared 5 (It's FREE and it's from ITALY - bravo, bravisssimo)

This app allows you to demux/convert/export a mpeg stream to whatever you want; DV, aiff, AC3, m2v, m2a...you can fix timecode breaks (GREAT feature) and rescale video. There is the deinterlacer, a segmenter, PAL/NTSC exporter, Quicktime exporter, etc.

Worth more than it costs

hmmm... i have done it. i opened the mpeg2 (muxed) file in QT pro, selected file, "export" (apple - e), then just choose "sound to aiff". voila! and THAT doesn't work?

Yes but..

that QT export doesn't work for mpeg1; you don't get any demuxing options and so you can only output video but no audio.

All the options for audio are greyed out, plus there is no option for "sound to aiff" on these mpegs. They probably were created in a Wintel machine.

Thanks for the info guys................

If you want to extract audio from mpg:
1. Turn your Digi's Core Audio Driver on or find another solution to route Quick Time audio digitally out;
2. Plug Dat machine or any other digital recorder
3. Record the sound
4. Put all recoreded audio back into ProTools

This method works fine on short forms
I have never tried longer files
Remember about all known problems with QT and audio (eg phase correlation)

Regards
Kuba
