Clip-gain is sample-accurate unlike plugin-automation. CG is much better and more precise for extra short gain treatment (de-easing, de-clicking etc.)

PT11 automation is time-stamped and sample-accurate

Reading through this old thread and saw this comment. Pre-HEAT does seem like the most important thing. So that begs the question: is a Trim plugin in the first slot Post-HEAT?

Otherwise, seeing as how they are nearly identical (assuming Trim plug is in first slot) in terms of being level control pre-fader, I prefer to use first-slot Trim plugins as I find they are more flexible in terms of my workflow—easier to adjust quickly and copy to other tracks.

I am hoping you are still a mod. Thanks if you see and answer this.

I think you are asking the wrong question What is the purpose of using the Trim plugin(for you)? For me, I use the Trim plugin in the last slot(of AUDIO and INSTRUMENT tracks, only) for the purpose of bringing the entire mix level down, but without altering the overall balance. My purpose is to counter my habit of mixing too hot(and it works perfectly for this). Let us know what you are wishing to do as there may be other ideas you haven't considered

HEAT can be pre or post insert, per track.

I haven't touched the Trim plugin since clip gain was introduced.
