Default hardware I/O question

Hello everyone.

I have recently purchased a Presonus DP88 (https://www.presonus.com/products/DigiMax-DP88) which features Burr Brown converters and a DB25 line-in section that bypasses the pre's and goes straight to the A/D. I have been wanting to incorporate my outboard gear into my mixing for some time, but didn't like the idea of running my hardware back into Pro Tools through my Saffire Pro 40 inputs (which the pre's cannot be bypassed, and the A/D just isn't as good as the Presonus unit).

ANYWAY, my question is: can I configure my I/O to use different ins and out's rather than output 1 having to come back in on input one? The reason I am asking is because I will be feeding the audio from the presonus back into the Saffire via ADAT. So I wanted to know if it was possible to do something like:

Output 1 - ADAT Input 1 as an insert loop.

Thank you for any and all help.

Sadly, hardware inserts must use matched pairs(output 1 with input 1, etc). Your only solution that I can think of would be to route audio out(using any output) and record the returning signal to a new track. One advantage of this is that you could quickly spot the new processed audio to be sample accurate on the timeline by using your original audio as a reference(then just Hide and Make Inactive the original track)

Having said this, I will offer my own 2 cents on this. I recently spent over to $1K on installing a patchbay and adding a second IO box to my own setup so I could add hardware inserts here. But since I have so many good plugins, I still tend to use the hardware during recording only(old habits die hard).

Thanks for the reply.

I am OK with that approach on the mix buss (just input monitoring to a new audio track) but I was hoping to avoid it for the track level stuff since I have multiple pieces of outboard gear that I want to use simultaneously, and input monitoring doesn't do delay compensation.

Thanks again.

There's more than one way to skin a cat. I love ITB stuff, but I also love hardware.

Also, I wanted a unit that I could bypass the pre's and go straight to the converters so I could use all my hardware during tracking. To me, THAT is where hardware really shines.

Indeed^^^ I use several hardware comps and EQ's for tracking

Everybody relax, nobody is throwing away their Shelford's

It was a funny comment....everybody agrees there is room for a hybrid approach.
