This happens to me too every now and then. Launch Pro Tools, record arm a track -- then BAM constant hiss that peaks the meter. Doesn't matter what the input is, can be mic or line in. Have to reboot and then it seems okay... until the next time it happens a few days later...

Mackbook Pro
OSX 10.6.3
Mbox 2 mini
PT 8.0.3

If it's not that, then it's a kernel panic from using sleep mode...

Sleep mode is not compatible with Pro Tools. This is outlined in the user manual.

10.6.3 also has not been qualified for use with PT, yet. I would, however, recommend trying the 8.0.3cs2 update and see what happens. Was this apparent before you upgraded to 10.6.3?

im running pro tools 8.0.3 and osx 10.6.3...is it a possible problem with osx do you think? or is it more likely to be an unfortunate mbox hardware issue?

The Windows community was having significant issues with white noise recently. While OSX may be the culprit in this case, I would recommend you upgrade to 8.0.3cs2 and see if this still happens.

I didn't see that in the manual but I basically figured out on my own that sleep mode seems to have the same effect as hot-swapping the Mbox2 (kernel panic).

I've had the "hot input" problem for a while now... I don't even remember when OSX 10.6.3 came out so I'm not certain if the problem was around before that. At any rate I just updated from 8.0.3 to 8.0.3cs2 this morning, and I'll let you know if that changes anything over the next few days.

So after updating to 8.0.3cs2 I haven't had a single kernel panic. Either from going into sleep mode or from hot swapping or the inputs pinning the meters when I record-arm a track (knock on wood?).

Hopefully that means this is the end of it...

Okay well it turns out I'm still having the overloaded inputs problem. Hot-swapping kernel panics seem to have been fixed, however.

Not sure if this has been fixed for the OP but it seems the hot-input thing is still an issue
