what pop filter should i get?
i want to get a very good pop filter for a female vocalist who has serious sibilance issues.
i've noticed one by Royer, and i recall some other one but don't remember the name. ? |

Re: what pop filter should i get?
I like the Stedman Proscreen.
How does it sound, you ask? Like it's not there. It simply removes the plosives that cause problems. But no pop screen is going to have much effect on sibilance. In PT, use a plug-in de-esser, preferably Waves. The Digirack de-esser will also work, but it's veiled sounding.

Check those out, at the top. The filter part is really sheer but its double sided and the distance between the front screen and the back screen is a little under 1cm. Since I've been using it I've been able to put the singers pretty close to the mic without worrying too much. Good stuff! |

Re: what pop filter should i get?
"Popless" is pretty good, you can add up to three filters in series to avoid the big pops. But pop filters are bandaids, start with the vocalist. Train her not to pop her P's, B's, T's, and other cons. Next, mic placement and settings. If you are using a hyper-cardiod setting on like a 414, there's a higher proximity effect (more bass more popping). You might want to set the microphone at an off axis angle to the left or right of the performer. It helps when they aren't splattering all over the mic. Then try the pop-filters.
Another trick is to use protools plug-in automation to just automate excessive bass on just the plosives. Mike Lattimore www.mindtheatreaudio.com |

What do you guys think of the ones that are all metal (as opposed to fabric)?

I’ve been using my wifes’ stockings for years! Just make a metal ring and pull the thin fabric over, there will be two screens close together, wich might be one of the reasons it works so good. It does the job without dulling the sound.
