Mix Distance for Theatrical Release?
Hello,
I know there is a "spec" for optimal distance from the screen in theatrical mixing, I just can't seem to find it anywhere online. Anyone know? (42 feet keeps popping into my head, but that's probably Douglas Adams fault ). Thanks, Frank |

Re: Mix Distance for Theatrical Release?
There isn't a magic distance. What you are really asking is the ideal viewing or monitoring angle. Since we are talking about audio, this being an audio forum, we want to know the optimal monitoring angle. The THX recommendation for monitoring angle, which is the angle between the left and right speakers at the front edge of the mixing desk, is 45 Degrees (with 40 to 52 degrees being considered acceptable). So, the distance depends on the room, the screen and the stereo base width.
This only applies to large dubbing stages or rooms where the speakers are located behind the screen. Typically the speakers should be placed so that the left and rights speakrs are just within the masking of the widest image (typically Cinemascope). You can calculate monitoring angle by the following formula: 2 X ARCTAN [(.5 x Distance between left and right channels) / (Distance from the baffle to the front of the mixing console)] Hope that helps...

Re: Mix Distance for Theatrical Release?
Thanks for the replies. I found what I was looking for in T.H.'s "5.1 Up and Running." I had mixed up the info in my head. In one chapter he touches on film prints being one frame early and lip sync being 47 feet (42 ms delay) from the screen. Sorry for the confusion, but thanks for the info.
