When I press PLAY, I want that.

Have you tried a transport button on a MIDI/controller rather than keyboard spacebar?
I'm currently using the MC Controll (Artist Control) as a control surface. I've used the Command8 and various others in the past, but none of them made the playback faster. There was a glitch about once in 1000 times, so out of fear, I stick to using the Space button.

Reaper plays instantly for me. And very stable. I'm much more comfortable with PT but I'd consider Reaper live. Actually I've used it as a multitrack recorder.
I've been using Pro Tools for over 20 years and it's fast for editing, so I prefer it. However, if it's a case of lost technology and we can't go back, it might be time to consider alternatives. Thank you for the information on Reaper. I will study that along with Ableton LIVE.

Disable the video engine. It won't give back the full PT 10 HD playback experience, but it's much better.

Didn't see if you've already tried that, so apologies if someone already mentioned it.

Thank you.
I'll disable the video engine and test it out tomorrow.

That only helps if you have a video track online. Otherwise it just hangs in the background eating 4GB of RAM

You can take the video track offline for the same response without killing the whole video engine. That's what I do when I'm editing VO or something non-sync and get frustrated by the sluggishness.

The video engine has been disabled from the start, and since I only handle audio, I never enable it. It can't be helped that it continues to consume 4GB of RAM in the background, can it?
I asked a specialist in Japan, who suggested that the playback engine's cache size would be the most relevant factor. I tried changing the size and testing it, but the lag remained the same.

Cache Size depends on the amount of installed memory.
If you’ve 64GB of RAM installed, try setting the cache size to 32 or maybe a little higher.
Since nothing seems to help, have you tried to disable plug-in by plug-in to see if any third party software is the culprit?

Edit: The playback engine shouldn’t consume any memory if disabled. That’s why I suggested it. Taking a video track offline will improve the performance but won’t entirely kill the video engine.

I'm currently using a Mac STUDIO with 32GB of memory. Since 4GB is already being used, I've set the playback engine's cache size to 20GB. The latest Pro Tools can't use third-party software yet, so I haven't installed anything.

Okay, how does PT act with just one audio track and without any plug-ins?

Try the latest PT release. 23.6 seems to be snappier when it comes to playback.
