Default SPDIF

yes, yes...lots of questions.....

I am working with an mbox but would like to track more than two channels. My friend has a metrichalo box that has some 8 mic pres.
Can I run the metrichalo through my mbox using SPIF?
What kind of cable do I use? Will regular RCA work?
Will Protools then recognize all the new inputs?
Is there any documentation on the necessary config of hardware and software?
