Default windows 7 (with error) update or not? pt11

just did a fresh install of windows 7 home premium and protools 11.
My computer attempted to do a windows 7 update and came back with the message :"Failure configuring windows updates"

Windows suggests i do a lot of things to fix this, ending with performing a system restore and an in place upgrade (re installation) DAMN you windows!

I dont use internet on the computer and im wondering if i should just skip the update? How does PT11 run on a fresh un updated install of win7?

Using a liquid saffire as an interface and a liquid 4 pre via adat.

Depends entirely on how old the install disk is. I personally would install Windows, hook up (even if just temporarily) to the 'net, and get all the Windows updates. Not having net access is likely why the updates failed, because that's where it gets the updates.
Get a stable, current Windows system first. Then install programs.

I did have the computer connected to the Internet just for the updates. It was a clean install of windows 7 on a brand new computer. Everything seemed fine so I installed my programs and set it all up. Apparently it is a very common issue with windows 7 and the suggestion from Microsoft is to re install windows.

I have been going through all 108 updates and manually updating them a few at a time until I find the one that is causing the problem. But 90% of the updated are security updates and I'm wondering if I need those updated at all if I'm going to be putting the computer in the studio and not connecting to Internet.

I had this problem with a pesky failed update that would constantly power cycle my computer once when booting.

Here's how I fixed it:

1. Turn off automatic updates
2. Delete the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
3. Reboot
4. Turn on automatic updates

What this does is clear out the downloaded update installers, and fetch new ones.

And yes, you should update to current before taking the computer offline and installing it in the studio.

Thanks! i just did that and continued installing the updates in sections instead of all at once and it seems to have worked. Microsoft should consider telling people this option instead of recommending a re install of windows 7. Crazy stuff! thanks for the help

Side note: my last Win 7 install took for-frikkin'-EVER because of an issue with the updates. It also wanted something like 135 updates. It seemed to be less overwhelmed if I just did 20 or so of them at a time. But it was a "let it run all night" affair, too. This just so I could have 'net access in my garage. Jeez.

Microsoft doesn't tell people this because they don't want to take responsibility for users mucking around in C:\Windows. It's understandable.

Once you're all updated, you should turn off automatic updates. Set Windows Update to notify you of updates before taking action. This can help prevent corrupted updates and slowdown from background downloads.
