Default Re: Mac Pro 5.1 Mojave - what GPU cards work?

Thought I would give a quick update
So I have not yet updated to Mojave.

But I have updated my Graphics card. On my Mid 2010 Mac Pro (as per sig line below)
I got the:
Sapphire 11265-05-20G Radeon Pulse RX 580 8GB GDDR5 Dual HDMI/ DVI-D/ Dual DP OC with Backplate https://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-1126.../dp/B06ZZ6FMF8
COMeap Dual Mini 6 Pin to 8 Pin PCI Express Video Card Power Adapter Cable for Mac Pro Tower/Power Mac G5 15-inch(38cm) https://www.amazon.com/COMeap-Expres...s%2C546&sr=1-4

And for my older Apple Cinema Display (with mini plug)
I got the Cable Matters DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort Adapter (DP to Mini DP)
https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters...0FBPGD3T7JN56J
All toll $207

And I just installed it all which was a breese about 5 to 10 minutes.

The procedure was ---disconnect all power and plugs on back or Mac Pro open up side.

#1 undo the side PCIe slot retainer two finger tight wheels. Pull retainer down and out.
#2 Press the button on the fan housing to slide the fan and Long PCIe retainer bar towards the front
#3 pull out old CPU and the old power supply cabe
#4 push the two new cable 6 pin connectors into the connectors on the mac
#5 push the 8 pin end into the Sapphire
#6 push the Sapphire into the slot
#7 push the fan housing and retainer bar back into position
#8 put the PCIe side slot retainer back on
#9 put the side panel back on the Mac
#10 put the DP to mini Dp cable adaptor on one of the DP ports
#11 plug all the cables back into the back of Mac
Easy peasy
Power on and boot the Mac,,,, black screen for 15- 20 seconds, then slight boot screen flash, and the desktop screen appears
Honestly the no boot screen is a total non issue. Working great so far

Thanks for everyone's help

Default Re: Mac Pro 5.1 Mojave - what GPU cards work?

Hello all and happy new year!
I have a 2009 4,1 to 5,1 Macpro with 10.13.6 which I'm planning to give a bit of life and less obsolescence with dual CPU X5690, more RAM, M2 boot and a GPU.

Coming from PT10 on 10.8.5 with nice experience, exception for 4GB RAM maximum use (16GB installed).

But now I'm experiencing lots of lag on PT 2019(.12)(.10) on even the most simple session. I mean... The visualisation cannot stay behind my mouse moves and this slows me back a lot..
Also navigating the session is quite laggy.
I dont believe it's a CPU thing...
I believe it's a GPU thing.... Am I guessing correctly?
Will I appreciate better performance? Or am I pointing completely wrong?

Thanks for you insight and shared experience

I also have a 4,1->5,1 (single X5690) and was experiencing that same lag on High Sierra. Since upgrading GPU and installing Mojave I haven't had any problem.

Are there any cards out there that are currently available that do Metal AND you get the regular Apple boot screen? That combo seems to be as scarce as hen's teeth. eBay and used cards are a no-go. Also would be nice to find a card that doesn't block the next slot up from the video card. I've read about a number of them that do that and leave one with just two open slots. I use one for my system ssd and would like to put my samples on an ssd in the other slot.

That latter brings up an interesting question and that is: apparently Metal compatible cards generate a lot of heat and I have to wonder how or if that would affect performance, especially of the ssd's.

I put in a flashed AMD Radeon 7950 3BG and yes I have boot screen. It's occasionally a little quirky (left-open windows sometimes come back in different places when I boot up), but nothing major at all. I'm running two "classic" Apple 20" LCD monitors.

After living with laggy GUI through several OS's and PT updates, it's been working great since I upgraded a year and a half ago.

The msi RX560 works really well with Mojave 10.14.6. We installed two of them in two different Pro-tools rigs without a problem. We also bought a RX580 and realized it is not a viable solution for HDX users, because the 580 needs all the power from the single power cable.

You can very easily power the HDX card from either the optical bay or one of the SATA bays.

Thinking of updating gpu to, but in the same boat considering power for videocard in combination with HDX and UAD

Could you elaborate with cable you used ? And where to buy ?

Thanks a heap !
