Re: Custom installs ? (plugins&instruments)

If you want to run an older OSX you can always partition a drive; you might want to look into APFS containers instead of partitions. Make Google your friend on that or get in touch with Darryl Ramm here - he's the ssd guru. |

Containers are not possible if he is wanting to run anything older than High Sierra. He will have to partition the drive. No problem there. But, if he does plan on using older versions of macOS, then having his external drives in APFS format is not what he should be using as he won’t be able to access the data on those drives. HFS+ is what he should be using. Again, another reason why I still have my externals, SSD or spinners in that format. There was a free utility by Paragon called Retrofit Kit that allowed older versions of macOS to read from an APFS formatted drive, but it does NOT allow writing. So again, I wouldn’t recommend going with APFS on an external. BTW, I had an SSD drive issue just a few months ago. Never say never. Nothing is infallible. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Custom installs ? (plugins&instruments)
I think your first statement is somewhat incorrect.
Open Core is a boot loader. I don’t believe it overcomes the fact that APFS uses Containers and HFS+ does not. You even mention partition in your post. I feel like you’re confusing what Open Core’s purpose is in the situation we are discussing. AFAIK, you still have to use partitions on any drive you want to run a version of macOS older than High Sierra. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Custom installs ? (plugins&instruments)
Sure.
I think we’re going round in circles. The distinction I was trying to make was that you have to use partitions. Containers, as discussed above, will NOT work with HFS+ formatted drives. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
