Venue Delay Compensation

Hi,
I have just been watching one of the Webinar Q&A sessions.

VERY Useful!

one question was the setting of Delay Compensation in the options section (which I have done on my SC48).
The general guidance RobertS gave was to turn it on for FOH and off for monitors - which I can totally understand.

However, my application is in a church where we use the one console for both FOH and monitors, stereo recording etc.

What would you advise for this application?

if i understood correctly, venue always uses the shortest way possible. in case you use a lot of processing on channels groups and master (for foh mix) you should go for monitor split channels not routed to main/groups. so they should not have delay compensation or very little.

please correct me if i'm wrong.

I would leave it off and be careful about plugins that are inserted.

there are a lot of times, where you don't need compensation. If you don't do parallel processing i believe you don't need it, just make sure that all your outputs go to the same processing and you'll be fine.

I believe that compensation is only needed when you have one signal split into multiple paths for processing. i don't use it for aligning drums to guitars, because mic placement itself is causing already arrival difference.

So does this not align all the input channels going to the same bus? If there are different insert plugins (compressors, eqs, gates) on each channel, they will all have a slightly different latency in the processing. With DC turned on - will it align all these inputs to the slowest?

Does each bus get treated independently? i.e. the compensation might be more when routed to the main LR bus than maybe an Aux bus so the output might be on the Aux slightly before the LR.

This is anecdotal, but I have mixed IEM's for many years and many artists on Venue systems and always used delay compensation and not once have I had a problem or a musician thrown off by a few samples of delay. I tend not to go overboard on plugins, but still my main vocalist has two Waves plugins inserted on his voice and it has never crossed the pyscho-acoustic barrier to create an issue for him.

The topic is important and I'm not dismissing the potential problems, but I would suggest starting simple and seeing if you really need to get into multiple splits etc.
