Re: PT 6.1 still quiting unexpectedly
Hi Chris,
If you mean Kingston ram..yes, that's what I use and I haven't had any problem with it. I've used Kingston ram in my macs since 1993. Although when I bought my G4...I bought 3 512 Kingston sticks at the same time...I did test it with my OEM 128 from apple and it worked fine. No errors. What I'd do, is to test the Kingston when you get it. If everything looks fine...go ahead and order another one exactly like it (ie..another 512 kingston..same part number..etc). Then..be done with it. That's what I'd recommend unless you plan on dumping that G4 for a G5 sometime soon |

If the problem is that OS X is "very very picky about memory", why do other programs and the OS itself seem immune to this phenomenon? To me, it seems that Pro Tools is the picky one.

Re: PT 6.1 still quiting unexpectedly
will those two Kingston dimms work with the stock 256?? or would you recommend just using the Kingston RAM?? I dont want to cause one of those incompatability issues you were talking about between types of RAM

Re: PT 6.1 still quiting unexpectedly
I think the chances are good you should be ok using both your stock apple OEM chip alongside the kingston ram.
There are plenty of people around who are also running their stock OEM apple ram along with various 3rd party ram...and doing just fine. I think the point was to always buy quality ram. And Kingston is fine. As far as compatiblity between chips...this has been a less common issue than straight out bad ram chips. But, I "have" seen it happen. I only mention buying all your ram at the same time, same brand, same part lot...is because it's just a better way to "minimize" the "potential" for these types of problems. (rare as they are). I think the chances are very good that you are not going to experience any problems with yoru Kingston ram playing along side your OEM ram. But, even if you do, you can yank the OEM and still have a gig of ram left that works fine. Like I said....there are plenty of people around here who do it everyday...and even if it doesn't work out in your particular case...you are still gonna have a gig of decent ram. I wouldn't sweat it. |
