Sony Spressa drives 12x to 16x are great. You can even take them out of the case and stick it in your G4 (Jan2001 or July2001) bootable and compatible with the Apple cd-rw software. I prefer toast over the Apple disc-burner.

I have had nothing but failure trying to get any Firewire devices working on my G3 B&W.

Have tried operating systems 9.02 to 9.2. Can't get it to recognize the device.

Works first time on G4s.

Have yet to find an answer to my problem

For Robin: I have seen this before. Make sure that you have a full install of Quicktime 4.1.2 or higher. The 2 Firewire DV extensions it uses should be enabled. Also, sometimes Macs do not see a Firewire drive formatted with a 3rd party utility If you can, format with Apple's Drive Set-Up. Give this a try.

Frank,
Quicktime 5.0.2 is installed. MacOs = 9.1
This summer ,a friend brought his rubber LaCie PocketDrive firewire HD & that worked flawlessly .
Does that mean i can trust a firewire cdrw-burner on my B/W G3 350?

Thanks

I will check my Quicktime version. The Firewire app in question is a CD writer. I am using Toasts extensions. I beleive I have tried every conceivable combination of extensions ... but I will have to see if my QT extensions are up to date.

The Wildfire CDR says it needs at least version 2.4 of Apple's FireWire Enabler and FireWire Support extensions. I'm running OS 8.6, and I tried FireWire extensions 2.4, 2.5 and 2.7. It still doesn't work. Apple's System Profiler doesn't recognize the CDR either. Glyph says the WildFire will work on any G3 or G4. They don't list a minimum OS version. I'm still swapping e-mails with them to fix the problem.

Has anybody had success using any FireWire device on the B/W G3?

Just bought my second Que! fire CDRW for home. You can get a 24X write for $209 at outpost.com. Plus another $30 off with rebate makes it $179.

My first Que! Fire CDRW I use my 9600 with a PCI firewire card. I've never had any problems. I can't imagine that a BW G3 with built-in firewire would have any problems with it.

I'd say you have two choices: either go for an external firewire
drive and find an OS/driver combination that works, or replace your stock CD-ROM with an internal burner. I haven't tried any external firewire drives myself, but I have put in a lot of internal burners, and for my money Plextor is the drive to get.
Yamaha drives have given me lots of grief. Don't know what burning programs you're using, but for me the Plextor 16X drive/ Toast 5.02/Jam 2.62 combination has been solid.
