Other Extensions do not reprogram the B&W G3's pci-bridge chip in the same way we do.
It is necessary to make this change in order to get the performance we require.

This is a known issue with the rev of the pci-bridge that Apple chose to put on the B&W G3 motherboard. They are very much aware of the problem. However, after extensive investigation there doesn't appear to be anything that can be done to completely prevent the crash when this parameter is changed.

On the good side, this does *not* appear to be an issue with Sawtooth (G4-AGP) motherboards.

I also have the same problem every 10th boot or so... B&WG3 350/PT Project/ScII/2940UW

Hopefully this isn't a problem for G4 users (not that it helps me any :^)

Joe:

Why is this happening with my 9600/300?

hi brad,
did as you suggested, tried the easiest/most obvious 1st. made sure only base extensions were installed, seems to have done the trick, am up to about 8 start ups so far without a hitch.
is this situation going to change with pt 5 at all?
many thanks

hmmm. I'm not sure why the DigiSystemINIT is crashing the first time when you boot up -- it's definitely *not* the same problem as the B&W G3's being described in the rest of this thread.

My initial guess is there's some flaky hardware in your system. I'm curious if it fails every time you do a "cold" boot or if it fails only the first time (when it actually is "cold"). After you get the system up, do a shutdown, wait for a few moments, then start it up again to see if it crashes. Also, after the first crash, do you have to power cycle the Magma chassis?

You could also try removing each "class" of HW you own -- first remove the SampleCell and see if it happens. Then try removing your Mix HW, etc. Also maybe try with the expansion chassis turned off to see if has nothing to do with the external HW at all. I know this is a pain, but it might yield more clues to get you closer to the problem.

Joe: In answer to your questions:

<<I'm curious if it fails every time you do a "cold" boot or if it fails only the first time (when it actually is "cold"). Only at the start of each day. If you shut down ProTools and the CPU, you can do a restart and the system loads fine.

<<After you get the system up, do a shutdown, wait for a few moments, then start it up again to see if it crashes.>> It does not crash when doing this.

<< Also, after the first crash, do you have to power cycle the Magma chassis?>> NO.

I've put together a extension and control panel list for (Pro Tools post v4.2-OS 8.x) trouble shooting if there's any thought the Pro Tools problem might have to do with an extension conflict when booting the DSI ect ect. This list is strictly for that and not a working extension/control panel set. To avoid confusion when moving around extensions and control panels and to be thorough in utilizing control over the extensions and control panels (extension manager can be flaky) create a desktop folder, one titled extensions and one titled control panels and move all your extensions and control panels to the appropriate folders you've diligently created on the desktop. Now move back these extensions and control panels listed below in the OS hard drive/system/extension-control panel folders and restart. Yes there's some extensions and control panels that would vary depending on circumstances (Quicktime ect ect ) so bare with yourself.

Extensions:
Audio CD Access
Digidesign DSP Manager
DigiSystem™ INIT
Digidesign® Output Driver
Foreign File Access
High Sierra File Access
Open Tpt AppleTalk Librar
Open Tpt Internet Library
Open Transport Library
OpenTptAppleTalkLib
OpenTptInternetLib
OpenTransportLib
Shared Library Manager
Shared Library Manager
Sound Manager
Text Encoding Converter

Control Panels:
Appearance
Control Strip
Extensions Manager
General Controls
Memory
Monitors & Sound
Mouse
Sound

Brad

Joe:

You are right! It appears I have a hosed/intermittent, "Vintage" PCI II Farm. I got a RA from Beto and have an advance replacement on the way. It should arrive later today. Hopefully this will solve the problem. Thanks!
