I didn't buy it at the time and I'm still on the fence about it, but for 220€ I may go for it, I live in France and that price is significantly lower than I was quoted from UK reseller.

Looking at the Avid FAQ it would appear I'm eligible (all versions from 9 upwards) but they - helpfully - don't provide any information or links as to how / where to buy. And if Googled the number of confusing sales pitches that come up, well, we all knowhow hard it is to understand Avid's terminology.

Thanks in advance!
I know, Avid does not make this easy.
But here's where I'd start, and it seems like only resellers have reinstatements for pre-PT12:
Upgrade + renew (Avid site)

Thanks - I had found that last time I looked a while ago but as I said, only one of the UK re-sellers bothered to reply. Obviously not a lot of profit in it for them.

The Paris company don't seem to be much help.

I have just found it on Thomann for 259€ - but I had to e mail them to check that it is a proper perpetual licence - the wording on the site is as ambiguous as only Avid can be.

I really don't get the "authorised" resellers bit from Avid - after all they have to acknowledge and verify the code, so anyone buying from an un-authorised seller is, well, authorised by Avid....

Upgrades were included as part of the re-tiering that happened back in April, as mentioned in the FAQ:
What about perpetual license owners without a current Software Updates + Support Plan?
Avid is reintroducing Upgrades (previously referred to as "Reinstatement" or "Get Current") which allow perpetual license owners to get onto a current plan to get new software releases, plug-ins and support. Perpetual v9/higher license owners can buy the Upgrade from an Avid Reseller. Users with expired Software Updates + Support Plans can also upgrade directly from their product in my.avid.com/products.
avid.com > Pro Tools > Upgrade + Renew has options for:
  • renewing a current plan/license
  • upgrading a license with an expired plan
  • upgrading a license without a plan
avid.secure.force.com/pkb/articles/FAQ/FAQs-1-Year-Upgrade-with-Software-Updates-Support-Plan has more info about upgrades.

OK. I missed that part of the 'tier'-thing, Jeffro. You people might have dropped us a email about it.

The last time, remember, was last december and when it stopped, reinstatements stopped.

The sale in june was $100 off, so the price is now $350, I guess. And 'upgrades' will be available until further notice(?)
This is so messy, it's laughable.
Shape up, Avid!

[/INDENT]avid.com > Pro Tools > Upgrade + Renew has options for:

Why does Avid make it so complicated and obfuscating? There are the following descriptions when searching online for the product. These are written on the actual Pro Tools banner/logo so one assumes this is Avid terminology as the same appear across multiple retailers.

1. Upgrade to current Updates + Support Plan
2. New Software Updates + Support Plan
3. Updates + Support Plan Renewal
4. Perpetual
5. Subscription
6. Subscription renewal

Either your marketing team is heavily medicated, or someone has made the decision to make this as difficult as possible. A buyer feedback on a French supplier's site said that despite being assured it was a permanent licence it was in fact an annual subscription, and as we all know, software refunds are simply never offered.

- previously referred to as "Reinstatement" or "Get Current" - how many more iterations of "we'd really prefer to sell you a subscription so will keep changing the terminology to mess with your head until you give in." are there going to be?

As frustrating and stupid as the journey to this point has been, we must realise that we voted with our wallets and won. If enough people had switched to subscription, this would never have been on the table again.

Just grabbed a discounted reinstatement for my perpetual license frozen at 2021.12.0. Thinking of holding onto it until Apple Silicon is officially supported.

Smart move.

I could well be wrong here, but with the economic pressures everyone is under, the whole paradigm of subscription needs looking at. Monthly costs need to come down. For consumers, rotate those subs for the streaming services, one month at a time, cut the costs by a fifth and still watch everything (staggered).

In our sphere, those with a perpetual license are theoretically immune to this, but in practice the infrastructure is subscription by stealth, and its is phenomenally poor value. Reinstatements are the only card the perpetual user can play.

For me I think it will likely be years before I really need to update. Only a handful of features - folders in the clip bin, say - would make so much of a difference I'd be tempted to cash it in early, otherwise it'll be for OS compatibility reasons most likely.
