Default DSP

Does this activate Pro Tools’ DSP system like the Carbon? Allowing me to save CPU ram and add on native effects with no latency?

1. Would it be fair to say that DSP only activates with Carbon?

2. I am interested in using UAD plug ins, if I purchase an Apollo QUAD, can It operate alongside Carbon? If so, how?

Thanks

My opinion, so please take it as such. I would NOT mix UAD hardware and Avid hardware. Assuming you want to track with UA plugins, Apollo is the only way to go. With Avid hardware(or any other 3rd party hardware), the likelihood that you have a latency nightmare is quite high. Having had UA plugins(without Apollo but with HD/Native), tracking with UA plugins was impossible, so I recommend picking Carbon, or Apollo, but not both. UA stuff sounds great, no doubt. But the 2 ecosystems never played nicely together for me(HDX may be a different story). These days, I am out of the UA swimming pool and staying out. I would have jumped on Carbon in a heartbeat, but it doesn't work on a Windows setup(Windows does not currently have AVB drivers)

Avid and Apollo hardware can get along. I run 4 channels ADAT out from MBox Studio into my Apollo x4 to track 8 channels in UAConsole with UAD plugins (4 with Unison pres). Having a Satellite Octo attached also helps. Too bad the x4 doesn't have ADAT out to go the other way. I can't tell much difference in the units' preamps, even with Apollo's Unison. I love the MBox for guitar tracking/reamping.

To answer your original question, no, the MBox Studio will not process external plug-ins, running in Pro Tools, using its DSP.
The DSP in the MBox Studio will only run the EQ, Reverb and Delay algorithms that are stored in the MBOX. These can be routed to various mix outputs, so say you only want reverb in your headphones, then you can do that.
