Default mbox2 SPDIF out not listed in hardware setup

I'm helping a friend setup his mbox and I've noticed that the spdif outputs are not shown in the hardware setup dialog. I assume this means that the digital outs are just a mirror of the analog outs and cannot be used separately, effectively making the mbox a 4in/2out device.

I had gone on the assumption that the analog and digital outs could be used independently as discrete monitor paths or hardware inserts.

Is this correct, or have I missed something...?

You are correct. The spidf just mirrors the analog. It's mentioned specifically in the Setup Guide.

They should really make that more clear on the product page, because people will naturally assume they will work separately.

Wow.
I can only ask why?

Seems like an intentional crippling of the software to me. They already built the circuitry, how much harder would it be for avid to make it work in a logical manner?

Oh boy, even my old Digi001 had separate S/PDIF Outs.
Good thing I found this thread, because I'm trying to get my lexicon reverb set up via the S/PDIF in and out. It was a straight forward matter with the 001, but now with my new 003R I can't figure out how.

The Digi CoreAudio Manager only gives me the option to mirror analog outs 1 and 2 to digital outs, which doesn't make much sense to me. I'd need to be able to send the AUX send to S/PDIF.

I'd be more than grateful if somebody could guide me step by step through the setup process. I seem to be too dumb, and the manual doesn't seem to help either.

I just can't believe the 003R don't let me use my Lexicon as external FX digitally!

Thanks a lot in advance!

E.
