Default looking for a new mic - budget $600

I will be using it mainly for recording vocals and acoustic guitar - so for sure a large diaphragm condenser.

Anyone want to recomend something?

Right now I have an apex 460, 430, and 435 large diaphragms. I am at that point where I need better I've got large shure collection going [c1000s', sm57s, 58s, beta 52] and a few audix.

I'm thinking AKG or rode.

most people will probably say a Rhode NTK but i think you would be better off saving a little more and getting something like a Neuman TLM103 which is about a thousand bucks

Have you checked out the Red Type B? It looks really good and has gotten positive reviews. I haven't heard it, so I may just be believing hype, but maybe it's worth checking out. www.vintagemicrophone.com is the website. You can also have those apex mics modified, search for the guy on ebay. Basically they are a good design with so so parts from what I understand. I did the mojave audio mod to my adk a-51 and it made it into a very nice mic. Just some thoughts.

AGK C1000s well i would upgrade them so i would consider looking towards a pair

as for a single LDC i would go for a rode K2 or a CAD M series. my M37s get used in every session

Agree, but disagree.....

Depends on what "vocals" you are looking to do with the 103. I actually HATE the 103 on ROCK vocals. Just too crisp and way too bright. I own one and honestly DO NOT USE IT on anything but female vocals and occasionally acoustic guitars. You can pick up a knat farting with it so the sensitivity is there, but that is bad at times for rock in my mind. I have been set using the Shure SM-7B mic for rock. Slam that through the X73i into a Distressor and you are money for ROCK vocals. $400.00 bucks or less and a great mic for vocals.

The C414 would be one that I would look at which is a little more than what you have to spend, but save up and get it when you can.

The RODE NTK is also a great mic and I own 2 of them. A little warm and cannot be used on all guitars or vocals, but when you get a deep voiced singer it is sweet.

Hope this helps?

i thought you started with a 103 anyway, correct me if im wrong.

My favorite for (most) vocals is the AKG Solidtube; I've seen them for as little as $699. For acoustic guitar, Neumann TLM103, but that's a bit pricey at about $1000. But if you want ONE mic suitable for vocals AND guitar, then I've always liked the CAD mics. This one is great choice:

e series worries me having a bettery in them. ive not found any info about exacly what battery is used and if its easyily replacable. what happens after a few years when the battery dies or if the battery leaks inside the mic?

im sure they sound good but would just be a bit conserned to drop the cash on them not knowing how they will shape up in 10 years. decent shockmount with cad mics to, although i need a new elastic for one of mine but it still works.

Never used the TLM-103 for vocals with him. Too harsh. Used it for guitars, yes, never vocals. Either go to the RODE NTK ot the APEX for him. His voice is too shrilly and raspy for that TLM.

Thanks though,

Doc

This vocal take was a female on the TLM-103. All the music she brought and basically sang too. Easiest recording I have ever done.

TLM-103 into the X73i I think? Possibly the 1272.

CASEY - Redneck Woman

Told her later that WARS were started from Country music.
