Default Mac OSX maintenance programs.

Ok Mac OSX is based on UNIX a program that was never ment to turn off. If you leave your Mac always on around 3 am and on weekends it run maintenance tasks. But You don't always leave your mac on you need a maintenance program.

I use MacJanitor its free and simple.

It's not quite accurate to say OX X is based on a Unix program. OS X is Unix.

Those maintenance tasks are basically logfile cleanup, it's really not such a big deal. It's really easy to type 'sudo periodic daily weekly monthly' into a terminal window occasionally.

I've been a Apple/Mac tech for the past six years and this is my disk maintenance plan of attack.

1) Boot with your respective OS X install disk 1. (use 10.2 if you're running 10.2, 10.3 if running 10.3) Once booted from CD/DVD...
a) run Disk Utility (this start-up CD/DVD will assume you want to re-install OS X- don't do that!)
b) Highlight your start-up hard disk
c) and click the "Repair Permissions" button.

Booting from OS X install CD or DVD is the best way to repair permissions. If you simply run Disk Utility from your hard disk, you can't repair some permissions that are part of an active start-up volume.

2) DiskWarrior 3.0.2 or later from Altsys. It rocks. It is the defacto standard for repairing disk directory/catalog problems that will occur over time and lack of maintenance.

3) Norton Utilities v8.x on occasion. It will find corrupted OS 9 files and it can fix boot block problems. This is a better value than Norton SystemWorks 3.0 because you're essentially paying for Norton Anti-Virus in that package. Norton Anti-Virus which is inferior to MacAfee's Virex.

As far as shareware utilities and cache cleaners go, just be careful and make sure your version of OS X is supported.
