Initial install problem
Hi, Pro Tools newbie here, attempting to audition it on a trial license. I signed up for an account and downloaded the software on a Windows 11 PC (See Sandra). I didn't find much in the way of step by step documentation so i just ran the "setup" application in the Pro_Tools_2022.10_Win folder. Installation completed just fine, no errors.
However, then when i run Pro Tools, I get the splash screen, plugins appear to load, and eventually while trying to setup the audio engine, I'm met with an error stating that it couldn't initialize the audio device. It sent me to a dialog (titled something like Playback Engine i believe?) where there was an option menu, among other audio settings. It contained just 2 options, one seemed to be a generic Windows based option (don't recall the wording exactly), this was selected. The other was Realtek HD, which is my audio i/o chipset on the mobo. Ah, this must be the problem, I switched it from the generic Windows to the Realtek and said retry. It tries for a few seconds and fails in the same way, returning me to the dialog box to choose again. Neither of these options work, tried both several times. I eventually chose Cancel on the dialog to exit Pro Tools. After doing that, any subsequent running of Pro Tools again produces the splash screen, but it now crashes out earlier than before, usually while it says it's loading plugins. Here's what I've tried, with no success:
Anyone have any suggestions? This is a pretty vanilla PC right now, contains no exotic audio input or output hardware. Aside from hard drives, the only other external device is a basic Logitech webcam. I do have a Focusrite Scarlett I use to connect a mic, but this was completely unattached during all of the above testing. Would love to get this going, but have spent the better part of a day or two now just trying to get to square one. Thanks! Rich |

Re: Initial install problem
Use the Scarlett as your audio interface. Be sure to install the latest/correct ASIO driver for W11 before attaching the Scarlett, then attach it to a USB port, turn it on, hold down the "N" key, then start Pro Tools and continue holding down the "N" key as it starts until you're presented with the Playback Engine dialogue and choose your Scarlett there.
Pro Tools is not quite plug-and-play and really wants to see an audio interface - which the Scarlett is. Nor is it going to work well on just any PC. Have you done all the Avid Optimizations? You really should. See the "Help Us Help You" link at the top of every Forum. I'm a 21-year plus user of Pro Tools on custom built PCs. I have no intention of moving to another DAW. However, if you don't need Pro Tools and you keep struggling with it, consider trying Reaper. It will run on almost any computer.

Re: Initial install problem
Pro Tools looks for an ASIO compliant audio device, which your Scarlett is. Like The Weed said, make sure you have the latest driver from Focusrite installed, then connect it to your system. Ensure that Windows is not using the Scarlett as the default audio device, as this can also cause issues.
Once the above is complete, launch Pro Tools and hold the N key down while it is loading. You will eventually be presented with the Playback Engine, only this time you should see an entry for your Scarlett interface. Select that and press Ok. At that point, you should be able to start playing around with Pro Tools. You can get the latest Pro Tools Reference Guide from this link to help you out getting to know PT. |

Re: Initial install problem
Good advice above but there is one more important thing. Right click on the Start button and open Settings and go to Sound and make sure that the Focusrite is NOT being used as the playback device for Windows(select the on-board sound card for this). The reason for this is because Windows will "lock" the interface and not let Pro Tools control sample rate. Once you get it working with Pro Tools, if you still need Windows sounds to play thru the same speakers, there are a few ways to accomplish this($40 on the cheap, or up to way more money than any beginner should spend)
As said, Pro Tools is also my preferred DAW, but you should ask yourself what you need from a DAW. If you want to collaborate with other Pro Tools users, then it makes a lot of sense. But if you just want to make music for yourself, you have several options. Reaper is a good one, but also look at Cakewalk by Bandcamp(free) and Studio One. There is also a free version of Pro Tools(called "Intro") that might meet all your needs(in case you get things working with the trial version and like it).

Re: Initial install problem
Hey Everyone, thanks for all the posts back. I did finally get it installed, not exactly sure how, to be honest. I ran the latest Win11 updates (had a couple minor ones outstanding). I then made sure the Focusrite was installed before trying to run, and even tho it did again complain with the same error about the "selected audio device", I switched it back and forth between the only 2 Playback engine options i had available (Windows Audio Device and Realtek ASIO)...it didn't like either for the first couple tries, but somehow it finally worked. I'm not one to blindly keep trying the exact thing the failed a second ago, but in this case it worked, go figure. The first error occurred with Windows Audio Device selected, but that's eventually what worked. I'm assuming it was having the Focusrite in play and set as the Input Device that made the difference.
I've just begun scratching the surface with the sw, but to a couple of you who questioned whether ProTools is necessary, i think it's a great point. I'm not looking to share with other ProTools users, I'm just a home user/musician. I have looked at Reaper and StudioOne a bit too, Reaper is probably a more practical solution. ProTools is most likely overkill for me, but since there was a trial, I wanted to see what the magic is. Thanks again! |

Re: Initial install problem
If Windows Audio Device and Realtek ASIO are your only choices, then the Focusrite ASIO driver is not installed or not installed correctly. Pro Tools should see and use the Focusrite ASIO driver and, as mentioned, go to Control Panel>Sound and on both the Playback and Recording Tabs disable any instance of the Focusrite, once you get the proper drivers for it installed. You also want to go to Control Panel>Device Manager>Universal Serial Bus controllers and check the Properties>Power Mangement of each one, if there is a PM Tab, and be sure to uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". And, after any Windows update, you want to check that these changes have not been reverted back to Default. You want to do this no matter what DAW you're using.

Re: Initial install problem
Hm, ok, not sure exactly how to determine if my Focusrite ASIO drivers are installed "correctly" or not, but i went ahead and redownloaded and reinstalled. Also unchecked all the USB power save permissions, and disabled the Focusrite for Sound playback and recording
Not sure if it's a result of any the above or not, but now when I attempt to run Pro Tools, I get the splash screen, then the UI, but then the whole thing just vanishes/crashes. Hrm. This whether i hold down N or not...I no longer can get as far as the Playback dialog anymore. Oy |
