You must be mistaken.

8.0.1cs2 is the last version for PPC.

Stability-wise, your best bet would be 7.2 because that is the last version before Apple announced the Intel transition. You will lose very little but gain "rock solid" performance. And get to run Tiger

7.3 = Universal Binary release
7.4 = Elastic Audio (Leopard support with 7.4.2)
8.0 = new GUI
8.1 = HEAT

I haven't heard it.... does Heat make a big difference in your mixes?

Yes and no.

Yes it makes a big difference when you play around with it, but no, it's nothing that can't be done without. It's just making a life a little easier, because it's so simple -- two knobs for overall sound, and one pre/post button per audio track

So, I repeat my opinion. If you're stuck with PPC, then I recommend 7.2 version running on Tiger. Whatever you do, stay away from 7.3 version (buggy first UB-release). Only two reasons to "upgrade" from 7.2 should be (1) Elastic Audio which you get in 7.4 or (2) some of your plugins is only supported/working in PT8 or later.

If you must use Leopard, which itself is... umm, "not that fast"; you can choose between 7.4.2 (old gui, slightly faster) and 8.0.1 (new gui, somewhat sluggish).

I've been working on a G5 dual2.5 and PT 8.0.1 cs2 since cs2 came out. It is solid. But the software limitations made me decide to build a Hackintosh, like the one Jeremy Roberts built.

Yes it does and, no, it can't be duplicated. It does certain things to a mix that are a result of harmonic distortion and compression as a result of a driving a modeled tape deck or consol preamp. It's really sounds quite good but you should check it out and decide for yourself.
