Worth the upgrade from 12.8.3 to 2021?

I've been running pro tools 12.8.3 for a while now and have started to consider upgrading to version 2021, and of course I don't have a reinstatement plan so I would have to buy a whole new perpetual license.


It's hard to find info on any new features, is there any performance upgrades/feartures that are worth throwing another $600 at?


I'm running on windows 10 and find my pro tools version to be glitchy at times.

Hi, welcome to the community.

If your setup is glitchy, you may want to update. A lot has happened since 2017, so in addition to improved stability you may like some of the new features too. Just google "what's new in pro tools VERSION" and you should find the pdf published by Avid, or at least pro-tools-expert.com explaining something about it.

I ran 12.8.3 for a long time... currently on 2020.12 and it is running quite well... 2021.7 (which actually has the features i want to use such as HDX hybrid) is not really useable as it introduces a few glitchy things in poeration and more crashes so i am parked on 2020.12..which is pretty good. i dont find much difference between 12.8.3 and 2020.12 but i would probably have stayed off plan knowing that i dont feel happy full time on 2021.7... im hoping the next release after 2021.7 or close after returns the stability, user feel and refinement of the hybrid engine on hdx so i can jump into that.... having said all that Avid support has been used in the last 3 months and they are surprisingly more on top of it and available so it is worth being on for that point of view... you should be able to get 12.8.3 running pretty solid so i would look at your system first and then decide when you want to jump back in for the benefits 2021 should have running solid soon ... others may feel differently ! (i'm on mac though not sure about W10) cheers M
