I have an HD3 setup running PT6 on a TiBook 500 (Magma 4slot,192I/O, Sync I/O) and a spare B&W G3 sitting around.
After reading the new mix article on mutli CPU setups, my wheels started spinning and I thought, why not run Reason on the G3, sync it up to ProTools and fly the audio out of the G3 (using a lightpipe PCI card?) into the lightpipe in on the 192I/O. In theory, it has to be possible. I'm not sure how I need to set things up. I have a MOTU micro express and a MOTU fastlane, so I'm sure I could connect the two systems via midi. However, I'm really new to the whole OSX midi stuff and am somewhat of a novice midi guy when it comes to OS9 (Freemidi/OMS). So.... If this is possible at all, I have a few starter questions. 1) What kind of PCI lightpipe interface should I get for the G3 running Reason? Probably something that can do 96k right? 2) Do I need to sync the audio card that will be in the G3 with the clock coming from the SyncI/O or 192I/O? 3) I will be using the ProTools midi sequencer to trigger the samples/instruments in Reason. How would I send those midi messages to the Reason system? 4) What kind of latency do you think this kind of setup would induce (As far as samples being triggered from one system, played back by another then sent across the lightpipe. I've trolled the DUC and found many similar posts, but most were dated back to 2000, maybe 2001. Our apps and systems have advanced and was hoping to come up with a more current solution. I know someday I'll be able to Rewire2 these apps together, but I don't want to wait until Q3 2003. Hopefully I can figure out something in the meantime. And thoughts, setup examples or experiences will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm running a similar setup only I've got Reason running on my PeeCee. You basically want to setup the Pro Tools machine as the master and the Reason machine as the slave. For this you need to connect word clock from the Sync I/O to the wc input of the Reason machine and then connect a midi in from your Pro Tools midi interface to the Reason machines midi interface. Set Pro Tools to send midi beat clock and set Reason to external sync.
The latency is very "liveable" |
