Re: AAF from cutter, all audio synced or just partially ?
MC schnittmeister here...
Field recordings can be a PITA to drag along, particularly if there isn't a workflow sorted ahead of time (e.g. rough cut started with camera audio etc). Plus time, knowledge, inexperience, expectation etc etc... Might help you to know how MC works with regard to file naming.... Typically we would import (rather than AMA link to the field recorder wav files) - so Avid creates MXF OPAtom files - so VOW03.WAV becomes VOW03.WAVA01.DD7BE92CC2374A.mxf - with an VOW03.WAVA0n.gobbledeegook.MXF for every field recorder track. Metadata is maintained in the MXF and should pass through the edit to the AAF. We then might sync with one video file, or group with multiples - or there might be a completely different programme (e.g. Resolve) that does the syncing which may result in intermediate files being produced (which may or may not keep the metadata intact). Editing then takes place - possibly using the camera audio (hopefully there is a decent mix there and we can just use the field recorder files where we think you'll need them in the dub - it can be a complete PITA to keep them all along for the ride, especially as field recorder workflow *should* make them easiily available to you. The sync slippage we see all the time. The cameras are never gen-locked so audio would have to be sub frame slipped to perfectly match the camera audio. They also tend to drift over time, even if jam-synced. The finished edit is then exported via AAF - which (depending on settings) creates new, consolidated clips. These seem to follow a different naming convention- the above VOW03.WAV became 18Y10M03A01.DD7BEE93ADC7E4A.mxf - where 18Y10M03 was the date of record - which was in the 'Tape' metadata in MC (VOW03.WAV was in the 'TapeID' metadata). Not sure if that's any help to you, but I'd recommend getting some workflow sorted out if you are using the same editors - to save you time in the dub and thus the production money. Can't guarantee the editors will follow them though ;-) |

Re: AAF from cutter, all audio synced or just partially ?
@trevora
Valuable infos from "the other side" for me. So, for the picture editor to sync also a single mono mixtrack from the field recorder is too much to ask for, generally or in certain scenarios ? Can that not be a „categorical imperative“ ?

Re: AAF from cutter, all audio synced or just partially ?
I'd say it would be very unusual to cut without at least the mix track from the field recorder. It would kind of be a red flag for me.
