Re: Quality of MicPres in Digi 002 control surface
A search will yield everything you need to know, short of finding out for yourself. It's been discussed many, many times. I have an 002R, same preamps, and find them more than adequate for my needs.
Cheers.

i'll give you an answer than a statement.......
It's alrite. Not that great, but not bad. but it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a better stand alone preamp for your front end. Warm things up a little.

Re: Quality of MicPres in Digi 002 control surface
I would say they are comparable to others in the price range of the 002, nothing stellar, but ok. If you have any great mics, their finer qualities will be all but lost on the way in.
I have also found the AD conversion to be pretty good, when you send a line level signal to the 002. It's DA does not sound all that good to my ear, at least through the monitoring outs. I use an Apogee 800 ADA to get in and out now, but worked without it for a year. If you are just getting started, I'd recommend the 002, plus a two channel AD converter/mic pre like the mini-me (make sure it's firewire, not USB). You will be 80% of the way to a fantastic signal path. Hope this helps. Opus

Re: Quality of MicPres in Digi 002 control surface
The 002 pres are an improvement over the 001 mic pres, but I only use them as a last resort. I have a few decent outboard mic pres (Presonus Digimax, Focusrite Penta and Great River MP2NV), and much prefer them over the 002 mic pres. Obviously, there's a big cost difference, and I think the 002 pres are pretty good for the overall cost of the unit. I just find that compared to my other mic pres, they are a bit lifeless and dull. They are cetainly adequate for a lot of applications, but I'd recommend budgeting for at least one good mic pre. Expect to pay $500-750 for any improvement over the 002 pres, and $1000 for a really noticeable improvement.
