Default Safe To Install Security Updates?

I think I asked this once before
but is it safe to install Mac OS security and java updates?

Based on nothing in particular I would say they are probably safer than system updates. However, since the SUs modify various parts of the system there is the potential for trouble.

Just do a clone of your system drive before updating so that you can easily go back if something is screwy.

I discovered that the new security updates don't apply to 10.4.9, the OS qualified and supported for Pro Tools.

I'm very suspicious of them, and there are lots of older threads where users were having problems with them too. I tend to test this stuff out in LE-land first because I have less on the line there. In both 10.4.9 and 10.4.10, after using the Combo Updaters, the security updates totally messed things up, and PT wouldn't open correctly. Had to go back and reinstall the OS. At that point, didn't bother even testing it in HD, 'cause what's the point? Just stick with the OS.
