Default Do I need Tri Level Sync?

Doing some upgrades in the studio and am preparing to do some HD projects.
I'll be using a Virtual VTR and locking it to my PT HD2 rig. I already have Horita Black burst
sync generators but was wondering what type of project would calll for TriLevel?

Thanks,
-Mark

hey mark,

lock your card to Tri-Level and lock your PT rig to a stable 48k WC. preferable, but expensive, setup is to get a unit that will generate both tri-level and WC...like NVision. also, the new Antelope OCX clock generator will resolve to Tri-Level and then generate WC off of that.

you can get by with just a stable tri-level into the card and then a separate un-resolved WC into PT.

set both timeleines to 23.976 and you are off to the races.

Hello. Also do consider that unless you are laying back to HD tape or are watching true 24 Progressive HD, you can get by with good old 29.97 because more than likely your video reference will be 29.97. There is also the specter of a Sync I/O with tri level sync on the horizon. A timeline for that is fuzzy at best, as the Digidesign people I asked at NAB just told me that it was sometime in the future. That's about as specific as they got.

Well I more than likely will recieve video as files and work from them.
I guess I'll hold off and rent if needed and if it turns out to be something
I'm renting regularly then I'll buy it.

Thanks

I've heard some rumours that in AES-Paris Rosendahl was demoing a Nanosyncs master clock that could generate / synchronize any combination of tri-level, black burst, wordclock, superclock and with pull-up and down options.

Too bad I wasn't there. This is hearsay.

We had to use tri-level sync for a 24P tape and Dolby E. The Dolby encoder and decoder required it. Interlaced formats still used regular black burst on the Dolby E.

Along those lines, this is a very appealing product. Sort of a sync Swiss army knife, when equipped with all options. Apparently it won't be available for a few months.

will we be able to use one of these boxes to replace the 4000 dollar dolby tri-level sync interface?

the dolby site says that the tri-level sync interfaces generates "dolby black" - is this just a fancy word for 29.97 blackburst or are we going to be forced to use their (functionally restrictive and ridiculously expensive) hardware box to do 23.98 dolby e laybacks?
