Default Pro Tools 10 Academic.

I decided to trade my beloved Tascam FW-1884 for Command 8 and Pro Tools 10 license. It turned out, that the license is Academic. I doubt very much it can be transferred to another person. Can anyone confirm this? And what's the deal with the Academic version. If Pro Tools 11 comes out tomorrow is the Academic version eligible for free upgrade?

I'm not an expert on Acedemic but the answer should be that its yours and its non transferable. I beleive that Acedemic comes with 4 free yeara of free updates. I'ts a great deal in you qualify.

What happens after these four years? Could it be upgraded if you pay for the upgrade?

If you are not the original qualifying academic purchaser you can't do anything with the license. You can't get free upgrades, you don't qualify for purchasing upgrades etc. and at some point in time it might be removed/suspended when you sync to iLok. If somebody has sold you an academic license make them take it back, and/or if it was purchase online report them to EBay or whatever.

No, still not purchased anything. A guy offered me this license and a Command 8 with 2 damaged faders for my Tascam FW-1884. I am just checking if it's legal or not. Thanks for the info!

To the best of my knowledge theres no upgrading a Academic License. It's sold at about 25% of retail and comes with free upgrades for the 4 years. I beleive the thinking is that after you graduate you can afford to buy the software yourself or will be working in a facility were its furnished. If your still in school when it times out just buy a new copy if you qualify. Its still the best deal out there. I do not know if the asset expires after 4 years or if you simply be come ineligible to update it.

I got the faculty version of PT 10. Observations: It was 1/2 of standard retail, not 1/4.
Was promised free upgrades for 4 years, but I had to jump thru a TON of hoops to prove I am indeed an educator. (4 years ago, I couldn't even SPELL edumacator, and now I are one!!) So now there's a PT10 asset on my I-lok that I believe says "never" expires. You just don't qualify for upgrades after 4 years.
Transferable? Hmmm, couldn't answer that one for you. Might not hurt to try to talk to CSA about it.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the input regarding price. Since I'm not qualified to purchase it I haven't looked too hard. I do read the threads with interest. I thought it was a little cheaper. Nice to know it doesn't expire.

He means he's not qualified to buy the software. And neither are you. And as I said earlier, if you do purchase the software that the current owner is not allowed to sell to you (it violates his license agreement with Avid), you are not able to obtain free or paid upgrades. And worse if you do get tracked down you might lose the ability to even run the current license. Of course keeping asking question here about all this might help make sure folks do go looking at your licenses in future.

It is all bad, give up now. Or I know, why not let us all know the name and location of the person who is trying to sell this stuff?
