System Freezes when calculating overviews

I'm having a problem I just can't solve.

When recording in 88.2 kHz, sometimes the system freezes completely when calculating the overviews after a record pass. I have to press the power button to shut down the computer. Nothing is written in the system logs.

It happens 1 - 2 times a day. Never had a problem when running 44.1 or 48 kHz.
The recordings are around 3-5 min. long.

The system is a Powermac G5 DP 2 gHz w/ 3 GB ram running 10.5.8.
The Pro Tools system is a HD3 v. 8.0.1cs2

I have been thinking it could be a RAM issue, but I have tried to run an Apple hardware test, which passed with no errors.

Any idea what the problem is?

Does this happen on every session or just the one? What hard drive are you using?

It happens on every session. Mainly I'm recording to an external FW800 drive. But I also tried using our internal audio drive. It makes no difference.

How much ram do you have?

At 88.2k you need double of everything from a 48k session.

I got 3GB ram.

But in a session that has no more than 26 tracks and no plugins etc. shouldn't do that. I can run 130+ track sessions in 44.1 kHz. (I have opened big pre-PT8 session that also needed re-calculation).

And it definitely shouldn't freeze the whole computer (screen freeze. mouse & keyboard doesn't respond)

Hi,

could be a faulty ram stick! can you try by rotating the ram and using 2gig to test, keep 1gig out when checking then swap around etc.

Have you checked all plugins are up to date and compatible!
